Off the beaten path movies

Ah, that reminds me - MOON
Sam Rockwell is stationed at a power center on the Moon...alone.

If you're a Sam Rockwell fan, matchstick men , confessions of a dangerous mind are a couple of his best. And worth a watch

Just read the Wikipedia page on this movie.

That's a wicked Twilight Zone style movie plot twist!

Signal.

Only big name is Lawrence Fishburn

"On a road trip, Nic and two friends are drawn to an isolated area by a computer genius. When everything suddenly goes dark, Nic regains consciousness - only to find himself in a waking nightmare."

Red Scare. Biggest name in it is John Goodman. Its about some religious zealots, cult. Directed by Kevin Smith of Jay and Silent Bob fame: Dogma, Clerks, Mallrats etc

The name was Red State...and it was an odd movie..especially for Kevin Smith..then again he is darker than he really lets on.

Gosh, youre right, my bad on messing up the name.

I didnt think it was odd, just very dark and violent. And awesome. Just wish more members had gotten a bullet.

I saw an interview with Smith about making that movie. He said whenever he got to a certain point where "this" should happen he would turn the story in a totally different direction.

Speaking of dark, How about 2 Days in the Valley with James Spader as a hit man. The soundtrack rocks too. I think it's on Netflix now too.

Felon with Val Kilmer is the first one that comes to mind for me. Val Kilmer is, IMHO, one of the most underrated actors of all time.

Gun Fu

Speaking of Old Boy, here's two Korean flicks I like...

I saw the Devil.

The Man from Nowhere.

Gleaming the Cube

Christian Slater stars in a movie about skateboarding and avenging your murdered brother.

Youll recognize a few others from the movie, but nobody huge.
There is a young Tony Hawk in it as a pizza delivery man, as well as stunt guy for Slater's skating scenes (some of them, Rodney Mullen did others)

I'm pleased to see so many movies listed here that I could have recommended. If I get started, I won't be able to stop. But I have to leave one because it -- and its whole genre -- is, so far, under-represented here.

Kagemusha, from director Akira Kurosawa.

If possible, watch it with a Japanese adult. A lot of the cultural subtlety is lost on Western viewers.

For those of you who think that they don't know Kurosawa, if you've watched either A Fistful of Dollars or Last Man Standing, you actually do know him ;)

Bad Day at Black Rock (intriguing story for 1955, and the cinematography blows AWAY any CGI today. Spencer Tracey & Ernest Borgnine both got Oscars in this)
Thunderheart (I've spent time on that Rez - Val Kilmer & Sam Shepherd are terrific, but Graham Greene steals the show)
Miller's Crossing (the Coen Bros. BEST movie)
Hard Boiled (John Woo thoroughly, enjoyably, ridiculous shoot-'em-up - get the UN-rated version, and dubbed, if you don't speak Mandarin)
The Playboys (wonderful period piece in post-war Ireland - tough performance by Albert Finney)

Boondock Saints (sequel also good but first one is better)

Kung Fu Hustle

Dark City

RockNRolla

Gattaca (trends a little more mainstream but a lot of people still never have seen it)

Science Fiction:
Altered States -- if you ever get the chance to float in an isolation tank, do it.

Scanners -- yes, you have free will. No one is influencing your thoughts.

Aniara -- from Imdb: "Based on a 1956 poem by Swedish writer Harry Martinson." "A spaceship carrying settlers to Mars is knocked off course, causing the consumption-obsessed passengers to consider their place in the universe."

Horror:
A Dark Song -- if you could make one wish...

Make some movie recommendations. Not IMDB top 100 movies, as most reading this will probably have seen them all.

A bit more off the beaten path. But being off the beaten path is no excuse for a craptastic movie.

I'll kick it off with some suggestions:
Scanners
Battle Royale
Dead Alive
In the Company of Men (if the white knight in you is strong, you may not like this)
Vicky Christina Barcelona
If you are looking for an 80’s dystopian movie
“The blood of hero’s”

Cute older Chinese series...
