One of the risks with outside dogs and no fences

Hope the pup heals soon... man, that's gotta hurt. Looks like he's getting the extra love he needs to pull thru

I'm a dog lover. First instinct when I see a random dog is to try to befriend it. In some cases, this results in many repeat visits with "some random person that I've never met's" dog. In many other cases I call the number on the collar and get to know another person who lives nearby.

I've twice been caught off guard, both times by 2 dog groups, who had bad intentions. Once at maybe 16 years old I was getting out of the car in my parents' driveway after hockey practice. 2 pits broke out the electric fence and I had to fend them off with the sticks I was holding to get back in my car. Can't imagine if it was my mother getting back with groceries instead. What if another neighbor's small kids were playing in their own front yard? my dad told the neighbor that the next time those particular dogs left their own yard would be their last, and that would've been the case had my dad been the one getting out of the car. For aggressive dogs, that has to be understood.

Sorry for your family pet. Hope he heals quick. Even if you can't prove it and don't know what happened (I.e. Possibility your dog was initially aggressive or wandered to their place), still report the incident to the police. If there is a next time that warrants action on your part, you'll want the previously documented case.

The neighbor was warned that if the dog came back in his yard, he would be killed. The dog returned and as a result, it was killed. I think the reason my coworker was arrested, charged, and fined for killing the dog, is because he threw the dead dog back into the kennel.

And that's where he screwed up, he should have immediately contacted the police/sheriff and reported the incident and I can guarantee that would have been the end of it.....
NC gives a person the right to protect themselves from a dog/dogs by any means necessary.

Any dog even growls at me or any of my possessions (animals) on my own property and it’s getting shot and/or smashed until it stops moving.

Kojak is dead.

He roamed free during the day, but was being put in a kennel at night, since the attack.

Something got in his kennel last night and killed him. My wife told me her brother found him this morning. He says part of the fencing was mangled and the dirt was dug away. Kojak was missing an ear and his entire neck and chest bloodied. He said blood was splattered across the dog house like someone had slung a wet paintbrush.

I told my wife I worried about her family. Either those three people are deaf or very deep sleepers, not to hear a dog being mauled to death in a kennel 25 to 30 yards from the house.

The neighbor claims she heard dogs barking when she got up during the night, but didn't bother to look outside. They live pretty much in the country and there are critters galore.

Wow. Bear?
I have a chicken coop made of kennel panels and one day found one side bent and looked like someone went at it with a crowbar.

Sorry about your BIL's dog.

Wow dude what kind of dog was he? I’m sorry to here about that.
Any idea what it was?

Some family members think a coyote did it, but I'm thinking it's one or both of the dogs that attacked him last fall.

As far as what kind of dog he was? I think just a sooner.

Wow... that's awful! There is something loose with bad intent. I hope the family can defend themselves.

I was riding a bike when I was young. A neighbors dog took a small chunk out of my ass. My uncle talked to the owners who cussed him and chained the dog out. My uncle handed me a baseball bat and we went for a visit. When the dog reached the end of the chain, he reached the end of his life. My uncle knocked on the door and informed them he had a shovel if they needed to borrow it. He told the owners any dog that bites children is not residing in his neighborhood. Of course this was in the 70’s.

I'd set a trap or two..... if you catch the ones that did it they'll have plenty of marks on em to identify them by. Anything that happened after that I'd keep to myself.

Sorry for the loss of Kojak but please call animal control and get those dogs impounded before they go to the next step and attack a human.

My brother just moved into an area with a large coyote population. One neighbor has shot over 50 in the last year. I just finished installing 800 feet of fence to protect his dogs.

Unfortunately, there's no proof they (or one of them) did it.

But, I do think a call would be a good idea, if nothing more than to get an opinion of what may have happened.

Thanks!

ETA: Turns out he did call animal control. He was told there was nothing they could do. Typical.

Like many here, been there done had to do that. When I lived in Chatham county, had a neighbor's dog try to go after my cats. Gave that dog a load of rat shot from a 22. Neighbor came over to complain and I explained that he needed to control his dog or the next time I'd kill it since I had three toddlers that played outside. I don't think he was prepared for me to admit I shot his dog and that the next time it wouldn't be rat shot. Never heard from him or that dog again

Sorry to hear about Kojak.

I will admit that the one time I drew down in any sort of defense was a neighbors dog coming into my yard and getting aggressive. Fortunately, the neighbor called it home before it got too close.

After looking closer at the picture, I'm seeing decent bits of hair on the fence.

I think for my own curiosity, I need to ride out there to see what it looks like.

sorry about your dog, i fostered homed dogs for humane society i had a 80 lb. pit bull and he chewed through a kennel fence he was a big baby i got some steel cattle pannels and wired it to fence never got out again

Sorry to see/hear that. This is a prime example of why you need cameras. The low cost of cameras for “just in case” is well worth it.

So sorry to hear about Kojak.

Had a German Shepherd that was horrendously terrified of thunderstorms (she was popped by an arc of lightning once) and she chewed through her fence to get into one of her houses once.

Dogs absolutely would.
I agree. Our old Lab would do it to get out (she hated to be left alone), and our male Great Pyrenees has pulled up the bottom of our current fence trying to get to predators on the outside.
They bite onto the fence and pull towards themselves trying to make a hole. It is crazy, and tears up their mouth, but some dogs will do it.

I hate to hear that about Kojack. Something needs to be put down after doing that.

I had a male Lab that would just pick a spot in the fence and tear a hole! The dog kennels are made very cheap! Cheap fencing put together with a couple of fence ties. My German Shepherd is out all day.she roams our 30 acres and goes into a 10x15 welded steel kennel at night. A couple of months ago, I heard her raising hell in my front yard.i looked out the window to find her holding off three coyotes in broad daylight! They where gone before I got back with the rifle.

Did I miss something here. I thought you said in the op that your BIL broke up the fight. If he broke it up he had to have seen the dogs involved So how is there no proof if he was an eye witness to the attack?

Two different attacks in this thread.

One happened in October (OP) and he broke it up. The second happened Monday night, resulting in his dog dying. There were no witnesses to the Monday night attack.

This is why I assume animal control said there was nothing they could do. Not only did no one witness it, but no one knows which animal(s) is responsible.
