Hiram Maxim's original patent was for a "silencer." Suppressor is just a modern euphemism that's a bit more practically accurate.

Silencer regulation is one of the few areas of US law where I envy quite a few European countries. Like most gun-related laws, people that have never heard a silencer overestimate what they do.

That's not true.

It's like the semantic argument people get into over "clip" vs. "magazine", but the "no such thing as a silencer" is just false and has no legal standing. If anything, there is no such thing as a "suppressor" in the eyes of the law.
