Hello all! I'm back with the question of if I can OC in my car. I've read the rules about ccw, but I'm here to ask about OC. Can I holster my pistol in the car with me(OC)? Or would I have to get one of those car holsters/holders? I understand that the firearm has to be in plain view, but I was curious to see if I could holster it. Thank you all!

What I do find interesting is the wording about long guns. I’ll bet there are a bunch of people with concealed long guns in their trucks who aren’t aware they might be breaking the law if they don’t have a concealed handgun permit.

I think this is incorrect and has been discussed before. The concealed handgun permit is for handguns only. It is not a concealed weapons permit.

When going to the range, I put my cases rifles behind the seat, is that legal?
The rifles are unloaded, with ammo in a separate container.

Correct. I’m pretty sure (nearly 100%) that statutes are written such that it’s all prohibited, but a CHP specifically exempts handguns only.

Is it easily accessible? That seems to be the operative standard. Funny when you think about it, same as “gun free” zones. The only place they work is in a librul’s delusions.

Theres no clear rule but I would not. the most likely encounter in your vehicle is for the cop to approach your window. can he see it from there? probably not, so you're starting out on the wrong foot.

I one hundred percent agree that getting a concealed handgun permit is the easiest.

that said open carry is 100% legal in North Carolina and the idea that sitting down in your car with your seatbelt on is somehow concealing it seems absurd.

should you unholster and put put your gun the table if you’re at a restaurant so that is not concealed by the chair you’re sitting in or God forbid you are sitting in a booth?

If you are open carrying should you always crabwalk sideways towards the officer with the firearm facing them so they don’t think you’re trying to conceal it?

if you get pulled over keep both your hands on the steering wheel and announce to the officer that you are openly carrying a handgun and let them know the position on your body before moving around and grabbing anything. it’s really no different than getting pulled with your handgun permit.

Not that this is legal advise but I talked with my local cops and their opinion was that having the gun on the passenger seat or dashboard was not only completely not practical but would also cause them more alarm seeing it there than simply being advised on approach that I was open carrying a holstered sidearm. That's what I did in the day.

Therein lies some of absurdity of "open carry". You simply can not always make sure it really is easy to see no matter what you do.

Reactions: Me.
I get the sense that firearms are new to you. You are experiencing a common feeling that new firearms owners have that carrying a gun is somehow wrong and you can get in trouble for it.

Number one you should become extremely familiar with your firearms and learn how to handle them safely.

Number two you are doing absolutely nothing wrong by carrying your firearm legally either with a concealed handgun permit or openly as you’re asking about.

third once you start carrying a handgun around on a regular basis you realize NOBODY cares. The only people who will comment on your firearm are usually gun owners who are interested in what you’re carrying.

That was my experience for the most part, 75% of people didn't even see it and nobody seemed to care too much.
