Open Carry in SC

Open and concealed. Both were legal only with a recognized permit last year. Both are now permitless thanks to the new law.

Is it still only for SC residents? I went down there few years back on a camping trip and read up on the rules before leaving and had to leave my pistol locked up in my buddies truck. Since I don't have a permit here in nc or anywhere meant I couldn't open carry in sc let alone conceal.

It's not just for SC residents. Permitless open and concealed for everyone 18+ (except felons, etc.)

No more "duty to inform" law enforcement that you are carrying, either.

We have a family place down by oak island nc and cross the line down the road quite a bit when down that way. Got to if I want to get the good fireworks. Nice to know that I want have to keep my handgun locked up in car now when I cross the line.

Admittedly I haven't read the new law, however I’m hearing any crimes committed while carrying can be elevated to felonies.

That is not correct from my reading. It does impose harsh, felony penalties for people caught carrying who have already been convicted on charges that are punishable by more than one year in prison (felonies, essentially).

In other words, a normal misdemeanor would not be elevated to a felony just by virtue of you legally carrying a gun at the same time.

Edit: I did find this upon a closer reading

Section 16-23-495. (A) A person convicted of committing or attempting to commit a crime involving a concealable weapon, as defined by Section 23-31-210(5), in violation of an offense listed in Chapter 23, Title 16, or a violation of Section 10-11-320, must be imprisoned not to exceed three years. A term of imprisonment imposed for violating this section must be served consecutively to any term of imprisonment imposed for the underlying offense, and may not exceed the actual sentence imposed for the underlying offense.

(B) This section does not apply to a person with a valid permit to carry a concealable weapon issued pursuant to Article 4, Chapter 31, Title 23, provided that the permit was valid at the time the crime was committed
On my phone at the moment. But I'll have to look up those referenced chapters of the SC legal code and see what's covered under that.

Are you SC folks going to renew your permits now?

For those that already have them, why not? Reciprocy with other states will be a big plus as well as new gun purchases.

I looked at the map and all the states I usually go to are constitutional carry now. I'm in NC though so I'll have to renew.

Absolutely. Even though Im an FFL holder its under an LLC and my FFL hardly works for in store purchases because its not my name on there.
