I have always wanted to build a longer range rifle and am pondering the PSA complete upper( minus optics) for 330$.... is it a waste of money? anyone have good experience with one?

I have no experience with that particular product but I thought that was a good price when I got their email today. I have been satisfied with their products that I have purchased. I want a 24” gun but I want it in 6.5 Grendel. You’re not going to get a 24” complete upper cheaper.

I have a PSA 20" upper. Rarely shoot it, but never had any issues with it.

I don't know how they can make them that cheap. A quality barrel is going to be that much. I don't see it as a precision upper. A 24" Grendel would serve a better purpose.

anyone shooting a precision barrel in 223? I was toying with the idea of a GM 19" barrel with a 1-6 twist for 200$ , but am thinking it may be worth it to have the extra parts of the PSA 24"

I have a 24" AR15, not a PSA (although I do have two of their rifles and really like them). In my experience with my 24" rifle, it has been relegated to a bench only gun. It is very heavy and very cumbersome maneuver with.

1:7" twist seems like a really fast twist for a 24" barrel. Can you find a long enough bullet that wouldn't over-stabilize that will still fit in an AR mag?

I would think (though no practical experience with that long of a barrel) that a 1:9 twist would be just about right for 77gr pills at 24"

Thanks for the feedback guys. I don't understand how a 1-7 twist would matter to barrel length unless the charge is over pressurizing the chamber . I would think a 1-7 twist would spin the bullet the same no matter the barrel length, it would help to keep it spinning faster for longer. Am I wrong?

Maybe wrong, maybe not. There is a possibility of spinning the bullet too fast, which induces yaw or "nose flip" of the bullet to extended ranges. Other weird things can happen as well.

Before buying this particular upper you're looking at, I would recommend you do some reading up on ballistics from the guys who know their stuff, such as Brian Litz. Just google his name and you'll find lots of info that will help.

Thanks Mike, an RSO friend of mine has been on the idea of a 1-6.5 twist barrel , so I believe any barrel can be great once you figure out its preferred bullet weight /charge combo.. and I don't disagree that a 24" barrel may be unnecessary beyond 20". perhaps I am just a fool to dream of making the groups I used to with an Anschutz supermatch with a budget AR at longer ranges. lol

ehhh... A long range rifle should inherently be accurate. They make a good budget AR, but PSA isn't exactly known for accuracy. My personal experience with PSA is that they generally work and are a good value. But not high quality or high precision. I've shot, disassembled, checked them out quite thoroughly and I find that some are fair and some are questionable. A quality barrel of at least 14.7" will give better accuracy than a 24" PSA.
