Optics quandary - LPVO or red dot with magnifier

I dealt with this quandary myself. Tried LPVOs and dot/mags. I was set to purchase a baby ACOG until I realized they didn't have diopters and the reticle was fuzzy to me.

I ended up trying the PA GLx 2x prism in a Bobro high mount. Love it. Eye relief is insanely good and it's just the right amount of magnification for my purposes. - I'm a little hesitant to have a PA optic on one of my primary rifles, but it does the job better than anything else I've tried.
Exactly my experience with the same problems and solutions. The GLx 2x ain't fancy or made in a friendly nation factory, but it's exactly the right solution for an all purpose AR.

I want to try one of those on my PCC.

I was getting 200 yard hits with it last time I had it out but the holdover was a hope and a prayer. It'd be cool to see what it can really do.
It's really only on there because I haven't SBRed my 9mm AR pistol yet lol. Since that's a 5" I won't be pushing out to 200 yards so the range dots I can barely see are fine lol

I put a Burris RT6 on a gun I built for my daughter. Shoots really well for an 11 in barrel. I thought about putting a red dot and magnifier but chose the Burris instead. I thought would be more awkward and unbalanced flipping the magnifier out of the way

Yeah I agree with you there. Grab the lever, quick swoosh and nothing sticks out sideways after. Now I need to shoot it lol

I always thought a dot + magnifier would be the coolest thing until I tried it. Tried it a few times and a few different ways. Every time I came to the same conclusion. The eye box/relief on magnifiers sucks and the combo weights as much as better setups.

I sold my magnifiers and run a dot by itself on guns I consider to be short range.

The only thing I still like about magnifiers is I think they are kind of nice for zeroing. My eyes aren't great either and having a magnifier to get dialed in is nice.
Having gone through Holosun+Magnifier, ACOG(ish) 4x, 1-(4/6/8) LPVO, I am now on the 3x Prism that Primary Arms has and can't see moving off it. Light, magnified, works without battery (and for those who need it, no astigmatism issues)

A high end LPVO is really nice if you have a need, but when you run it on 1x 95% of the time, you're just lugging around dead weight and decreasing speed with no apparent benefit...just my opinion based on experience. Most training I do is inside 25m, and for the occasion I go beyond that, I haven't seen any great benefit as we are still only talking 50-100m.

I'm sure it would be a totally different situation if I was in the mountains, rural environment, with vast distance between me and my target.

Mine ain't high end lol. 6x will be nice for target identification for my blind old eyes. Or just finding a target.

I have a 1-6 strike eagle on one of mine. It ain't that great but it's all I can afford.

I got to look thru a razor recently and it made me really wish I could get something better.

I would also like the try the 3x PA micro prism. I have one of their 1x models and really like it.

If you wanna get crazy I am thinking about a PA 3x microprism with offset holosun 507 with the ring. I have the PA 1x in 9mm in green and currently have it on my PS90 and love it out to the redundant zero of around 175-200 yards depending on ammo.

I have the 3X with their integrated offset mount and Riton RMSC dot and it’s a nice setup.
