Not exactly sure what section to ask this in, anyways..

Does anyone know any good outdoor ranges for rifles/handguns in the triangle area? I’m willing to drive further but I’m looking for something that isn’t super busy where I can practice movement and more than just standing in a lane. I’ve heard of Drakes Landing but I’m pretty sure that place is more commercial and is focused around clay shooting but I could be wrong.

Curious about this as well. I've been to Drake and Deep River and both are excellent for clay shooting. I'd like to find a place with rifle ranges. 37 psr looks like it's worth checking out. A friend also suggested Rad Range in Burlington. https://www.radrange.com/products

Frontline Defense, it's worth the trip!
Annual membership is great value for what this facility offers, members only M-F and open to the public weekends. I'm a full member.

I have been a member at Woody'a for a hot minute. I like it. Always plenty of space. I have never been there when all of the bays were full. The rifle firing lines can get crowded sometimes, but the handgun bays are usually available. I would definitely recommend Woody's if you are a human that can follow clear instructions and have the money. If you bring a guest and are paying their guest fees, it will set you back $40 bucks for the day. Yeah I know that sounds expensive, but in the larger picture it is a great deal. Most places are by the hour and a day at the range would be much worse. @Cascadence If you would like to get more information feel free to send me a PM.

I went out to Distinguished Pistol yesterday with my teen son. Nice facility! Not crowded, just a handful of other groups in and out. Very friendly and helpful staff! We’d go again. I do want to check out some of the others mentioned here. Appreciate the tips!

it’s indoor but “range 1” at personal defense and handgun safety center. Allows movement draw from concealment, and has a few items to set up your own “stages”

Associate membership has been like $70 per year and $11 per session in the past

Distance is like 3-15 yards

One more to consider. Bud of mine just told me about it. He used to be a member. I haven’t been, but it looks pretty cool.

I was about to get excited at this since it's not super far, but their operating hours are going to. E entirely within my work hours other than on days they're open to the public lol. Oh well.

I did have to bail outta work at noon on a Friday to go. Next time I’ll have to drag my boss along. He’s the one that told me about the place.

I'm not sure about "practicing movement," but there are a few places you might look at.

The John Lentz Hunter Education Complex near Ellerbe (so near Southern PInes). They renovated it about a year ago and it's really beautiful and run by a bunch of great NC Wildlife people. It's basically free for use, and they fundamentally charge "by the target" for the shotgun sports (trap, skeet, 5-stand). The shotgun stuff is all state of the art automated. It's a bit of a trek from the Triangle, and if you decide to go, you should look at going down 74. If you try to go South and then West, you'll probably never be seen again since it's almost one of those "you can't get there from here" deals. But I think for you, you'd probably have to view it as an all-day event.

The Wildlife people have also taken over the old Wake County Firearms Education & Training Center, and they appear to be doing to it what they did at Lentz: significant rebuild and reorganization. Apparently when they have it up and running they'll actually have things like air conditioning and an online reservation system. Similar to Lentz, it will be basically free to the public. It's closed for the work now, but is set to reopen some time "in the fall". Quite a relief to see this facility finally going in the right direction.

Also -- and again a bit of a trek for you -- look at opportunities around Ft. Bragg. They have a really nice Clay Target Center just north of Ft. Bragg and open to the public. And their Rod and Gun Club Range (on base) is also open to the public.

I usually go to Wesmar in High Point since it's close to my house. Not the best amenities and they do have specific rules you need to follow, but it's an affordable place to go shoot and the staff is nice and helpful. They have a 25-yard pistol range, a 100-yard rifle range, a shotgun range and an open field with a clay launcher for skeet shooting. Occasionally they will hold classes there but I don't think that they offer tactical training.

I've been to Rad Range in Burlington and it's really cool. They have a clubhouse with a cigar lounge, a bar (for after you finish shooting for the day), a small shop, and billiards and darts. They have a 300-yard rifle range and a pistol bay. I think they have skeet shooting too but I'm not sure. They just opened recently so it seems a little unfinished in terms of target stands, distance markings, etc. but the property itself is super nice and reminds me of a golf course. They do have steel targets downrange and I hope they add more soon. Prices are reasonable, the owners were nice and they have Class III NFA full-auto machine guns available for rental through reservation. One more plus is that the Red Oak brewery is not too far from this place.

Thanks for the heads-up on this. This range is fairly convenient for my sporadic needs for longer ranges than my "back yard", and MUCH closer than Lentz (which tops out at the 100 yd. range). I'm a bit amused at the "British pub" business model in the middle of NC, but I wish them all the best with that. Pretty clearly the business model is oriented towards "corporate events" and such. I hope they remain open for random public use. I'll probably be going up there this week for a lengthy session. 👍

Do you know how I can get in contact with someone at Woody's regarding a membership? I went to the website and sent a message that way but have not received a reply. Would like to apply for a membership or at least get on a waitlist. The website itself says they are not taking new members but I don't know how updated it is.

I'm a member and I think Woody sent an email saying new applicants needed an existing member to vouch for them. It is a great tactical range and especially during the weekdays not crowded. There is usually no more than 10 people at a time on the grounds M-F. There have been times when I'm the only person there for a period of time.

He did say there isn't a waiting list currently. I imagine he'll get back with you eventually. He's a pretty busy guy.

Appreciate the quick response. I live about 35 minutes from the range but I have never been and do not know anyone who is a member. If anyone on here would like to meet up and potentially vouch for me, id appreciate it. Id pay for the guest fee and could bring my own stuff/ammo. I have been wanting to get really into the long distance shooting and with Woody's being so close, I really would like to get a membership.
