As many here know, my son is working on his Private Pilots ticket. He recently soloed at Lexington and also at PTIA.

Today he left the airport environment for the first time and traveled outside of Greensboro's class C airspace and flew to the Belews Creek practice area on his own. He turns 17 at the end of next month and his goal is to get his Private license by sometime next summer.

Before anyone mentions it, he does know not to text or talk on his phone while flying. He normally doesn't take it on the plane when he flies, but he wanted to take a couple of pics for Mom and Dad and friends.

That's awesome Dave. Fine son you have there

Congrats to your son, Dave. That is quite an accomplishment.

Flying solo at 17? Wow, I'm proud of him, too.

Nice...............and thanks for sharing this with us.

Got a fantastic career ahead of him. My dad flew fixed and rotary wing, starting in .Mil but probably would've jumped at the chance to start 5 years sooner

That's awesome Dave. Great pics.

He looks cool as ice in that picture. I am sure he is (almost) as proud of himself as I know you are. Awesome job all around.

Congratulations to him and you... It is great to see folks, especially young ones, turn goals into reality!

Very cool. I had a buddy in college that had his pilots license. He did private corporate jet then on to commercial pilot.

This thread means more to me than anyone can know. I've been taking Neil to airshows, 3 or 4 a year, since he was a toddler. He's been flying flight simulators on the computer since he was old enough to sit upright in front of a monitor and keyboard.

He's definitely got a future to look forward to, and he's a good kid and we're very proud of him.

I bet you are, hell, I'm proud of him. Not many young men like him anymore.

What an awesome young man you have there Dave. I don't know him personally but what I have read on this forum he seems like a level headed young man who knows what he wants in life. Congrats

Do we see an future in the Air Force?

Sorry Cowboy, I just now saw your question. He's actually planning to enlist with the USMC when he turns 17. Who knows from there where that will lead him. There is a chance that when they see that he has a civilian pilots license that he could get recommended for OCS but I'm not sure. He wants to enlist and to fly anything for the USMC or any other branch you have to be an officer. But he's bound and determined to enlist, so we'll see where it goes from there.

I know several who have went on to fly helicopters. Glad to hear we still have patriots in this country.

Flying a plane solo at 16. That should make anyone proud. Most 16 year olds are getting high and chasing tail. You've raised a fine young man.

dooooode - really like the reply... maybe you talk from experience?

I applaud ANYBODY that can accomplish such a feat especially from the youth today!
I was 16 once. dooooode

Congrats. One of my daughter's elementary school friends got her pilot's license before she was 16. She had her 16th birthday party at the air field she flew out of. She is now at Embry Riddle in Daytona. I think she wants to be a commercial pilot.

Very cool. The FAA has changed the rules now. My son couldn't solo until 16 and can't get his Private license until he turns 17. He's been taking lessons since he was 12 but took a break from flying for about a year last year and started back this summer. If it wasn't for the break he took, he'd most likely be getting his Private ticket sometime in November after he turns 17.

I thought this was a fitting song for this thread. I was going to post it in this thread when I started it. But I had some issues with the video then, and had a few more issues just now. Anyway, here it is:
