Okay, here are the ground rules:
  1. Pick only one caliber per platform
  2. You may apply one caliber across multiple platforms
  3. Caliber should be selected assuming "SHTF" conditions
  4. If you use either carbine or rifle only, pick "none" for the unused one
  5. Your reply should contain three answers
Here is the question:

Given the ground rules, which caliber do you select to be your only one for each of
  1. Pistol
  2. Carbine
  3. Rifle
There is one important unstated factor here -- unstated because I want to see how many take it into consideration.

Please feel free to elaborate as much as you like explaining/defending your choices, etc. Please do not spend your time picking apart the obvious flaws in the exercise. Accept the premises, or just don't play. Above all, have fun and play nice!

So many unconsidered variables. Trying to get home from 50 miles away if STHF it's 22 mag. Defending my home from a large or sustained attack its 5.56. Sneaking & peeking & taking out the opposing leader(s) it's 300blk subs. If I HAD to pick one it would be 5.56, but I don't have to :)

This

If it's SHTF, I want to be able to pick up ammo.

1 Pistol 9mm because there is more 9mm sold each year than all other centerfire pistol calibers combined. This is SHTF scenario, so availability matters.

2. Carbine 5.56... this is SHTF scenario, so availability matters.

3. Rifle 308 because 5.56 is wimpy.

My first post, amazingly, agrees with Booger... so I am compelled to offer another, with different reasoning.
  1. Pistol 41 mag
  2. Carbine 41 mag
  3. Rifle 22
Please feel free to elaborate as much as you like explaining/defending your choices, etc.

1 Pistol 41 mag because I'd be like Dirty Harry if I needed to defend myself... bad guys would fall over before I pull the trigger.

2. Carbine41 mag because I really like my Marlin 41 mag Trapper, and I like carrying it with a 41 mag pistol.

3. Rifle 22 because I agree with RattlingRedneck.

In defense:

Pistol 9mm: most of my carry pistols are 9mm. I am most comfortable and learned with it. Most police and military carry 9mm ammo so finding more shouldn’t be a problem. (Though, being a self defense/last ditch weapon, I doubt hundreds of rounds will be fired, but having ammo available allows practice or training others.)

Carbine 5.56: again, when it comes to “combat readiness” it is the caliber I have most experience with. I am confident that it will drop bad guys accurately within any distance I should realistically be shooting at folks. (Unless I’m defending my home; anything more than 100 yards should have me running). Also, same ammo prevalence with LEO and Mil. Allows for reshoot and continued practice.

Rifle .308: can effectively hunt anything in North America, especially in our region. LEO and Mil resupply possible. Accurate and powerful enough to “snipe” even at ranges I shouldn’t be engaging.

If possible, I would trade the rifle for a shotgun. There isnt any critters in this area I couldn’t drop with a 5.56 (WROL means I don’t deal with caliber restrictions). But with a shotgun I could use light birdshot for game up to heavy slugs and buck for large game and defense.

Honorable mention given to the .22 LR. Many people have killed deer with the little .22. I would only choose the shotgun over the .22 as hitting birds on the wing is more difficult. Also, I’m read an article once that showed calorie requirements v small game harvesting and completely surviving off of squirrels and rabbits was unsustainable.

Even if you kill bigger game occasionally, you still oughta be trapping rabbits, not shooting them. Traps kill when you are not there.

Totally agreed. Long term relying on ammo to feed you isn’t really sustainable.

5.56 rifle/carbine and .22lr pistol.

The reason for 22 is I can carry a crap ton of ammo and I can suppress it. I know 9mm is a better defense round but in shtf, I am practicing avoidance more than anything and eating is more important than roving gunfights. SAWC is a big concern. Although it really depends to on what kind of shtf. Am I bugging in ala hurricane Katrina or am I leaving like a nuclear strike that made my home unsafe long term.
