Parkland and 2A

I've been reading articles that the Russkis have been bombarding social media with extreme opinion about Las Vegas and Parkland, coming down on both sides of the debate. They are playing America like a violin.

WASHINGTON
An organization that monitors Russian trolling has spotted a peculiar similarity between certain types of social media postings that went up immediately after the Oct. 1 Las Vegas festival shootings and again after last week’s shootings at a school in Parkland, Fla.

The pattern: A day after the tragedy, the trolls tweet on all sides of the gun control debate. A day later, they push conspiracy theories.

It’s a formula designed to stir up emotions over mass violence and gun laws, and more broadly to foment anger and exasperation over the U.S. political system.

The trolling activity that Hamilton 68 follows appears to be similar to — but not the same as — the operation identified by Special Counsel Robert Mueller in a Feb. 16 indictment of 13 Russians and three companies. It describes an elaborate, St. Petersburg-based operation, known as the Internet Research Agency, where the Russian troll activity has been centered.

The indictment alleges that several Russians — apparently including one who is cooperating with the FBI — gathered intelligence about the U.S. political landscape on the ground. Then “specialists” created social media accounts in the names of Americans whose identities they stole, or by creating fictitious personas, and began posting inflammatory content on Twitter, Facebook or Google.

Once upon a time, I shared an office with a bunch of social workers, 4 or 5 women, 1 dude, and me (a RN). The dude was good to go, a great guy. The women were all pro-LBGT, liberal, anti-gun, etc. Very catty bunch, all smug and superior. They all worked different shifts but had periods of overlap. I started a rumor here, made a little comment there, attributing them to other social workers in the office. I watched the little spark turn into a small firing, growing and growing. I was playing all sides against the middle, stirring dissent. The dude caught on to what I was doing, he loved it. By the time all was said and done, none of those women trusted anyone and were suspicious of the others.

Certainly if little ol' me can play those games, you know other states' intelligence apparatus are doing the same thing. We're seeing it play out on TV and in social media every day.

When I would get bored on ship (which was quite often) I would start rumors and see how long it took for them to get back to me. Quite a lot of fun actually. Especially things like picking a land locked country and starting rumor that we would have a port call there soon. Hahahaha

Oh, hell yeah! Starting rumors deployed was so easy. 80% of the platoon was on the left side of the bell curve and would believe anything. You know how many went searching for the steak and lobster MRE?
