My wife bought me a '12 Silverado with the 5.3L. It has the AFM that some believe causes more trouble than it's worth.

A coworker runs a shop in town and performs the delete and a tune for $250. I can buy a device called Range V8 that will prevent the truck from going into V4 mode. It's $200. I imagine there are a few more devices available. I just haven't researched much.

Trying to decide which route to take; pay for a tune or buy a gizmo.

That's not a bad price for a delete and tune. You could do it yourself online and if I remember correctly you will be towing so you may also enjoy the added benefit of being able to change things down the road with your own tuner.

I personally would like the ability to switch it back on/off if I needed to with a gizmo/programmer. You never know when you might want to return it to factory OEM settings to sell it or if you have to bring it into a dealership. I would think, like the Superchips programmer I have for the Hemi, that you would want to return it to OEM settings prior to a dealership running any type of diagnostics on it that might give it a false red flag due to the tune.

Just my $5.00 opinion.

Diablosport tuner and be done.
I bought a Diablo for my 2005 Silverado after a rear gear swap because it was advertised as being able to adjust for it. I finally had to return it after I found out it was not capable of doing it and tech support sucked. Just a heads up to be very dilligent before out putting the cash to buy one, also the company at the time would not stand behind it if you bought it through amazon or ebay for some reason. That was posted on there home page.

I used the diabloport in tune on a 2010 for several years. Moved it to a ford diesel for a couple more years. When I bought my current truck it wasn' compatible for the def delete I sold it to a member here. I had no reason to need send it back. But I bought mine off ebay and they still provided tech support. I suppose the member that bought it here is using it and hasn't had issues

pay the man or get the Diablo, but what ever you do go ahead and get rid of the cyl cut out.

At the moment, I'm using Manual and choosing gear 5, instead of regular Drive. That keeps it from going into 6th, but it also keeps it in V8.

IIRC the only way to truly delete the afm is a cam and lifter swap. Not to say he isn't. But how can this guy delete and tune for $250. I' thinking what he' doing is just turning afm off in a tune.

Maybe deactivate is a better choice of words?

I had a Diablo on my 04 Sierra and it worked for chaging tire and gear size as well as shift points. I have a Edge on my F150 now. Cant change anything but tire and gear ratio.
Get the Diablo or if SCT makes a tuner that would also be an option.

Have it deleted and tuned locally. If you plan to do any performance upgrades like a cold air intake etc, do it now then have it tuned. This way you can take better advantage of the upgrade. Nothing runs like a tuned 5.3.
