Pellet rifles

Which model is the Ruger?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
The Air Hawk .177. I had it awhile and the Remington I have look very similar - probably made by the same company and branded different. My father in law likes the Ruger - so its sitting in his house. None of what I have is “high” quality but it all shoots decent if i do my job.
If I was buying a new one i would go Spring piston Hatsan or a PCP

I just got a benjamin prowler and crosman diamondback. These are gas piston break barrel .22 at 900 and 1100 fps factory ratings (obviously shooting slower than that)

my biggest issue is that it seems like i get the scopes zeroed (both have a centerpoint 4X scope) and then pick them up a few hours later and they are off by like 2-8 inches!!! This is mostly shooting with the for-end resting on a stable surface so i don't think it is foregrip hold issues.

is it me (not a rifle shooter and could be having inconsistency in things like eye relief distances etc sometimes i can call a pulled shot that is my fault but some feel perfect and go wide right!)?

the scope?

or the rifles?

once they are dialed in, they hit a 1.5" swinger pretty consistently from 25 yards....but I am spending a lot of time re-sighting in with every session!

I have gone all in and have a PCP marauder on the way!

Best airguns I ever had were the Brocock air cartridge revolvers and rifle when I was in the UK. All the benefits of pre charged tanks but handled like 38 cartridges.

I had the Day of the Jackal styled Fox rifle and I think a Specialist revolver. Alas the entire concept was banned as part of thee 2003 ASBO legislation, but they were great fun and very accurate.

I've seen similar results. As others have mentioned, there's quite a bit of difference in pellets...brands, shape, weight. I doubt the scope is getting knocked or bumped. There could also be something to shooting "cold barrel" like corrosion or something minor that doesn't effect a bullet, but a little wimpy 12 or 14 gr pellet gets all sorts of bumped around. I don't know...just guessing at this point.

I'm bummed that i don't have either of my rifles trustworthy enough to grab and pop a squirrel's nuts at moment's notice, cold bore shot. I can get it dialed in, but that first shot is going to be a spolier.

Pretty sweet rifles.

Terrible name.

I think I fixed the issue with one of the scopes. All I had to do was use an Allen wrench and take it off of the rifle. Now I’m popping hits with the iron sights pretty easily. The next test will be whether or not that sighting holds in tomorrow etc.

I was gifted one of the ruger impact max rifles recently by my sister in law. It is fairly accurate and fun to shoot in the back yard.

I came into possession of the Ruger Air Hawk Elite II a few weeks ago. Haven't opened it up yet, really torn about keeping or trying to sell it. How loud is your Ruger when fired?

It’s louder than I expected but not as loud as a 22 short fired out of a bolt action. I am not sure that helps , but one of my neighbors saw me shooting a squirrel and thought i was using a “real gun” it likes pellets that are a title heavier , but not the heaviest ( 10-12 grain or so )
Any weird pressure on the stock will throw off the accuracy , hold it the same way every time. I had to fire about 50-60 pellets before it started showing accuracy - maybe break in , maybe me figuring out how to hold it
It’s a nice step up , but if i was starting all over I would have paid more for a Hatsan under lever rifle.

I read that SWFA SS scopes can be used on air rifles.

I actually bought two PCP rifles and all i can say is WOW!

Benjamin Marauder

and

Gamo Coyote Whisper

shooting them is night a day compared to the springer/piston rifles. So far they are accurate and seem to pop just a hard or harder than the springer that claims 1100 fps.

I went with .22 and it feels pretty good to only spend 2.4 cents per trigger pull...

not sure which one i like better yet. will probably just keep one of them in the long run.

i see a pistol in my future as well.

I forgot to mention that both of these PCP rifles are quieter than the crosman diamondback which was quieter than the Benjamin marauder.

I don't have a decibel meter but I think the edge for quiet goes to the Benjamin. pellet hitting target is definitely louder than the gun firing.

Hand pump them to charge? Or scuba tank?

How long to charge the marauder? How many shots from a charge?

I kinda sorta want one, I’m just not sure if I want the hassle of ancillary gear.
it seems like it took about 10 minutes of pumping. I was out of breath and my heart rate was elevated!

That said, I suspect I will acclimate to that and build the correct muscles fairly quickly. It is not for the faint of heart for sure. I could see some folks tapping out and going a different route pretty quickly.

I think i did 40 shots and it was still above 2000PSI. so i'm guessing around 50. That said I suspect that I could easily keep shooting below 2000 with a little slower pellet speed (probably wouldn't even have to adjust the POA. @Carolinatlc would have a better idea, i'm a total noob.

my concern is that I will have to get smaller targets! I was pinging the 1" steel from 25 yards pretty easily and don't really have room to stretch the distance too much more. Honestly the piston gun with open sights hits the 1" target 1 out of 4-5 shots and hits the 2" target 4 out 5. I pinged the 2" steel 10 times in a row going without going slowly.

They all seem to be different for some reason. My 22 rifle seems to be very consistent from around 2800 down to 2000psi fill. If I go over 2800 or let it drop below 2000, accuracy falls off. That typically gives around 35-40 shots. The 177 rifle is about the same and I can get a few extra shots out of it. The 22 pistol only likes to be filled to around 2700 or so but is pretty consistent down to 1500psi. That‘s normally 20 shots or so as the air tank is smaller.

I have targets setup out to around 65yards and can consistently hit them with the 22 rifle. The 177 is not as accurate at those distances but is great under 40-50 yards or so. I dropped a squirrel with the 22 last weekend at 85 yards.

I just picked up a maurader .25 from the classifieds here. From 2k to 3k took 2 min. 21 seconds at a leisurely pace with a few stops to look at the guage.

If you would like to get really serious take a look at EdGun, they are IMO a masterpiece. You can get them up to 30 caliber I believe and you add tanks for up to 3000 psi pressures. I have a co-worker that just ordered a 30 cal. and they state you can hunt with them. I do not have personal experience with the company but I do have plans to make this one my next purchase if ammo crap gets any more idiotic.

So I am trying to return the Gamo. It was advertised as super-quiet and is basically medium-quiet and the marauder just plain shoots better.

So with the return policy, I am going to have to exchange...

another maruader in .177?
the bullpup Benjamin akela in .22? https://www.airgundepot.com/ben-akela-air-rifle-22.html
regulated maruader in .22? https://www.airgundepot.com/benjamin-marauder-field-and-target-wood.html
marauder pistol? https://www.airgundepot.com/benjamin-marauder-pcp-air-pistol-177.html
umarex compressor? https://www.airgundepot.com/umarex-ready-air-portable-compressor.html

I'm leaning towards the akela or the compressor

I really like the look of that akela and will probably get one. It is still pretty heavy though. It probably comes down to how you are going to use them. As I’ve said, I love my marauder pistol for walking around the woods or discreet pest extermination at home.

right now it’s basically 100% backyard planking.

The dogs do a great job of keeping all the pests away from my house.

based on my limited experience it seems like it will be difficult to outperform the marauder.

I really wish the marauder pistol had open sites. Then I feel like I could practice sight picture etc. for my pistol stance.

Are all of those realistic looking air pistols airsoft?

Made a economical pellet trap with a HomeDepot 5 gal bucket and a couple bags of synthetic mulch. Cut a square on the lid (or side) equal in size to the target. Back it with a piece of cardboard. Fill bucket with mulch. Replace lid and you're ready to go.

I have 5 of these. a 1/3 USPSA/IDPA target fits on the lid and a 10 shot pellet/6 shot BB revolver makes for fun cheap practice.

One target is packed full for use with the pellet rifle, the rest are only half full just for use with the revolver.

was able to stretch out the backyard range to 40 yards and the marauder is still pinging the 1” swinger easily.

ended up requesting the compressor in exchange for the camo. So much for the exercise 😂

Great thread for my question - What air rifle would you get a 5 year old?

My girl turns 5 in April and is all about guns and hunting. I figured I'd pick her one up for her birthday.

Any suggestions?

As a side note, I took my first deer with a Korean made .45 caliber air rifle. (Yeah, yeah, I know - I was old when I started hunting.)

For plinking or for hunting?
I have no clue for a hunting air rifle for a 5yr old.

For plinking, I recently picked up a Daisy Buck .177 BB gun for $18 at Wallyworld for my 5 yr old. We haven’t given it to him yet - we have been working on obedience and responsibility. So I can’t give a review on how it is for him to shoot. But it is a little smaller than the Red Ryder and I think will fit him better.

Plinking. :)

I've been eyeballing the Pink Crossman 760 Pump Master. Looks like around $100 bucks. I figure it will be a bit big for her, but we can set it on a rest outside and plink at some ballons and such for fun.

I put my first PCP on order yesterday. A Gamo Urban. I was debating between a few different options that would all be hand pumping friendly but it seemed like it was one of the only ones in stock.

Now I need to pick out a scope for it! Not sure if I should just put a 3x9 on it or something more to 12 or 16 power to stretch it out to 50 yards. Something with a mildot reticle as I’ll be targeting squirrel heads at variety of distances.

I have a centerpoint TAG it is pretty decent for what it is.

should be fun!!!!

I bought a cheap dovetail to picatinny adapter and put a cheap red dot (bushnell TRS-25) and so far after a few days it is holding zero very well!

Easily hits the 3" target at 40 yards. able to hit the 1" targets at that distance with reasonable frequency.

I'm dabbling my toes in the water. I can't commit to some of the prices of these so I decided to go old school and I ordered a Crosman 2100 with a scope!

Takes me back to my youth having BB gun "wars" in the woods. I think it will keep me entertained in the backyard for a bit.

Ended up with a UTG 3-12 bug buster. The side focus knob is quite nice.

I pumped up the Urban over a week ago with the intention of shooting it but things got busy. Ended up keeping the full pressure for over a week now. No leaks!

started out at 10 yards to get the scope on paper, then put it a little past 20 yards to get a zero.

once I had the zero I put 3 pellets almost in the same hole without eventrying too hard. Man I am going to enjoy this! (And that is my 5 year olds hand, Mine aren’t that tiny!)

The squirrels won’t stand a chance.
