Perishable skills

The biggest perishable skill for me has been knot tying. I needed to tie a simple bowline the other day...it took me 5 minutes to figure out which way the rabbit runs around the tree..

Cheating helps

I wowed my wife and kids when we went hiking, using my watch (digital at that;)) to figure out which way was north.

Couple things about compass and map. Using handrails is important, creeks, trails, gaps, etc.

The concept of 'shooting off target" is interesting too. You intentionally shoot a bearing that is not exactly where you want to go, then find a handrail in the area. When you hit that hand rail you know you have to go left or right to get to your destination. Shooting directly at a target is problematic, you could miss to either side. When you shoot off target, you plan to miss so you know which way to turn.

If you are on a known trail you only need one reference point to triangulate your position. If you know what trail you are on and you can ID a landmark, shoot a bearing to that land mark. Then transfer to the map and shoot a back bearing from the landmark. You are standing where that back bearing crosses the trail. I did that in Slickrock Wilderness on a WEA course and had the other 9 students jumping up and down screaming I was wrong and didn't know what I was doing. Until the instructor walked up and said, yeah he's right, that's where we are.
