PHA Defensive Pistol Match Scores for Saturday August 24TH

Match for this Saturday is cancelled 05/26/18
Due to rain forecast 70-80% starting 9am
Sorry everybody. See you in June on the 4th Saturday!

Brett
Bummer .... was finally going to make this one.

Oh well.... see you next month.

Everybody have a great holiday weekend, stay dry and god bless all of those that have served.

I am thinking of shooting in this match this weekend. I have never shot competitively, is there anything that I need to know beforehand? Just looking to get my feet wet and see if this is something I want to pursue further, and try to improve my skills.

This is the perfect match for you. When you register, just let Brett (he and his wife run the match) know that you are new and he will walk you through everything.

Big things to be aware of:
*wait for the RO to tell you when unholster and load your pistol
*don't muzzle sweep yourself at any point
*be aware of the 180, follow this link: https://www.ssusa.org/articles/2017/4/18/avoiding-the-180-dq/
* keep your finger off the trigger while moving

Most importantly, have fun.

RedandBlue: Bring your weapon , 125 rounds and a willingness to have an enjoyable day. Brett runs a good match, with a bunch of shooters who will help you in any way they can. You will be pleased at how your skills will be tested and improved.

Brett, it was nice to shoot on your squad. Turned out to be a great day.... we had some timely cloud cover and until the end of the match it wasn't as hot as expected.

I should have known better than to make changes before a match.... and as promised I have already switched back to the stock striker spring.

That said, I still have a lot to learn with the new pistol and optic.

Lots of draws, one handed, coming into positions requiring leans and whatnot helps me when I decide to use mine, pretty much anything to solidify your index, beauty is no live fire required.
Might give the Yong Lee interview on the Firearms Nation podcast a listen, he's a competitor and an LE instructor in a dept transitioning to optics on duty pistols, there's a few insights in there. http://firearmsnation.com/yong-lee-shooting-with-red-dot-sights/

Brett, many thanks to you and your wife for putting on a great match. I had a ton of fun, and look forward to many matches in the future. I appreciate you putting me in your squad and making me feel as comfortable as I could being a new shooter in that type of environment. Thanks again, and I look forward to shooting with y'all again.

Thanks Beef 15! ... will give it a listen.

Anyone shoot 1911s in these?

Not sure anyone did this month, they have been represented in the past. I ran mine once, and quickly learned my SWC profile was different than the H&G68 that works flawless, and you can marvelously lock up the works slide lock reloading with a 10rnd mag. Good times.

Each stage will typically have a mandatory reload which slightly levels the playing field, most stages are less than 30rnds, but you will probably want the ability to start a stage with 40rnds between gun and belt if need be.

I had a buddy try to field a 1911 for at least 6 matches. He was never on an even playing field against most people purely because of the number of reloads and the timing of those reloads. It was a really good way to get used to gaming the stages and practicing reloads, but it was too frustrating and he went to double stack striker fired once he had had enough.

I think I'd like to try it. Maybe next time? I don't plan on winning but the power of browning compels me.

This match is not designed for the pure competitive shooter. It is for those who carry concealed on a daily basis and to shoot what you carry.
I suggest to shoot as many of your pistols as possible to see what works for that gun and what doesn't work for each gun you shoot.
Shooting under stress will show you the shooter where your proficiency's lag or excel! Its not all about competition in a survival mode!
If you truly want to race stick with USPSA /IDPA /IPSC matches!

I got my Milled Glock slide this Thursday and shot it with mounted rmr for the first time on sat.

I think I’m in love.
Appears to suit you well, you are the first I've met that didn't have a significant and rough transition period.

Not real happy with my execution, visual patience is always a struggle; war with MPP2 on stage 3 cost seconds right out of the gate then way too many points down throughout the match, a couple hundredths per target of sight refinement would be far better than adding 25-50% to the stage time. Not seating a mag on 5 and comedy that followed didn't help anything either.

Thanks for putting it together Brett, enjoyed it as always, highlights what to work on.

@Beef15

I listened to that podcast you posted last night. Good stuff and mirrored my experience.

Enjoyed shooting the dot but i had some hiccups. For my first outing, I was happy it wasn’t a couple steps back though. I put my first shots through it and zeroed it that morning - ha. Hope I can hit the gas with more time behind it.

Irons still feel more natural / faster to me under most conditions at this point.

Well got my gear loaded in the truck ready to go and now here I sit in Prime Care...The wife has hurt her back.
Safe shooting everyone.

Man those make up shots on steel on 3 and five are painful. Visual patience should be easier to learn than WHO right?
