I'm looking for a place out of the way where I can go to shoot a bit without bothering anyone. I don't want to go to a range, I just want a place where I won't be bothering anyone and where no one will be bothering me. Anyone got any ideas?

It sounds like you’re asking about public land on which you can shoot, like they have out west.
Unless you know someone with land, I don’t think those places exist. If they did, especially being close to CLT, they would get overrun and trashed in short order.

That doesn't exist anywhere near Charlotte. Unless you can get permission to go onto someone's private land. And most folks with that much land worry about liability issues. As noted above,, it's not like many western states where there are thousands of acres of public land for such activities.
And sadly,, not many public gun ranges either.

Back when I lived in the Midwest, houses with basements were as common as houses with a garage here in the South. I met a few people out there who would shoot in their basement. Being as I am from the South this was a complete shock to me, but I have seen with my own eyes how you can convert a basement into a rifle lane. Finding a place out in the open in the Charlotte area is nearly impossible these days. Maybe 15+ years ago before all the urbanization. I remember when Pineville and everything south of it (Ballantyne did not exist) was farm land and people use to hunt around there. But those days are long gone. Maybe you know someone with a basement.

If you live near Charlotte and don't join a club you basically need to drive about 45 miles southwest into nowhereville SC and buy 50-100 acres.

Hey! That's what I did! Actually, 45min SW, puts you around York, so you have to go out a little further. Probably 1hr, min.

This, I only let a select few on my property. The liability is just to great

McConnells, Sharon both 40 miles from Charlotte on Google Maps. Basically anywhere between York and Chester is fairly cheap and remote

As stated above... " Not Anymore"
Property owner liability is just too high. Especially if the land is not properly developed for shooting.

The development between York & Chester is astounding. Not much open land there anymore. With a few exceptions, pretty much all of York County is out of the equation. There is also alot of land being purchased and developed in western York County between York and Blacksburg. I would say one would need to look south of Chester down into Fairfield county towards Winnsboro.

Maybe, maybe not. I think you can find land around 3K an acre within 45 miles from downtown charlotte.

Now that we've proposed impractical options...

OP...
About the closest thing you'll get are the public ranges like Leeds in SC or the one up in Uwarrhie (Flintlock?) I don't know if Uwarrhie has a range officer. And go at low traffic times.

Leeds is ok when nobody is there. Best is when it opens on Monday mornings and middle of the week from 6pm to dark. Weekends are generally not good. The brass chicken(s) were a pain to deal with untill I took my leaf blower and blew every pc. of brass off the concrete into the grass behind the firing line. They then had no reason to step onto the concrete pad. 🤔😂

I’m in the process of selling my beach house. If the beach house sale goes through I’m going to also sell my rifle range in Vale nc along with other houses to build a forever home. My rifle range is between 19.9 airal and 25 geophaphical acres with creek. Year around spring that produces at least 1 gpm in the harshest drought with huge concrete underground cistern with well pump. I have tore down the house and barns but I left the stone fences that traverse the property. I have also cut miles of UTVs trails that cross the wooded property. Large flattish old homestead with mountain in back that you can not over shoot. From the top of mountain you can see Kings/Crowdors mt to the south, and South Mountain state park to the West. Probably going to list around 125-150k. The range is cut back to about 150 yards now but depending on how much you like cutting trees it could be more. I own properties from the mountains to the coast and I’m wanting to consolidate everything to one large tract with a nice house.
