Totally worth it or useless doodad?

I have mags with them and mags without. Are they really necessary or useful or are they just a piece of something that probably didn't really need to be there?

I thought you had cases of Troy magazines.

When I preload mags for a match I’ll use them. Especially when I know it’s gonna be super dusty. Otherwise, no.

The best use I’ve found for them was as po-boy mag-pulls on Gen2’s but this doesn’t work on MOE’s as the dust cover can no longer be snapped on the bottom. Even as mag-pulls, they were just “mehhh”.

I recently threw all of mine in my spare parts box.

They are suppose to take the pressure off and protect the mag’s feed lips ... does it or doesn’t it ... I don’t know.

They do, I use them on loaded mags that aren’t being used right away.

That's correct. It pushes the top round down just a bit and stops them from spreading...

Makes a difference on the 40s for sure.

I was assuming they were dust covers. I can't recall where I saw that.

If the intent was to relieve the feed lips, that's fairly smart.

Well, dang it. I was all set to keep mine because of the info upstream, but you had to throw this in here.

Guess I'm getting rid of them now.

They won’t clip on my non-windowed PMags, which I have a bunch of.

It was the next to the last bottom. They were giving them away, so I was taking them and selling them for about a dollar more than I paid.

After five cases of 80, the sixth case (mine) was technically free.

My understanding was not for dust but to protect the feedlips

I have them on all my PMAGs, whether loaded or unloaded. (All non-windowed.) NBD, AFAIC.

I can not get the covers to close on my non-windowed loaded Pmags. The windowed mags? No problemo.

I have squished 31 rounds into a pmag before. With 31 no way that cover would snap on.
Prolly not your issue, just thinking out loud. Maybe drop a round even if it's to 29 and see what happens.
I can't recall if very-first pmags used that clip or not. Are your mags ancient?

I just noticed these things are gen specific. I wasn't paying much attention to that.

I had one mag that the cover wouldn't small on. I see the mag is 1st gen, but the two covers I tried wouldn't snap on. Of the four covers laying around on my bench, I saw on the inside that two were M3 and the other two were just M.

I was trying to snap the M3 on the mag, but it wouldn't snap. The M marked cover snapped in place with no problem.

    Hmm.

Good idea. I count rounds so as not to overload them but only a few of my covers work on my PMags that loaded to 30, so maybe downloading is the ticket. Thanks.

I know the ones on my 40rd mags are different than my 30rd mags.

As stated several times above, made to take pressure off the feed lips when storing loaded magazines. They do work, and are needed if you store fully loaded magazines in locations that experience extreme temps both cold and hot, such as vehicles. I’ve had to replace numerous magazines at work which were stored loaded in vehicles without the cover. They will develop as cracks and/or split on the top rear of the magazine or corners of the feed lips. Have not seen any issues with magazines stored in climate controlled locations, however I developed a habit to use them on all my magazines. YMMV

I reckon I need to go find them, download my magazines by one round, and put on the cover. I normally download AR mags by one round so they go into a rifle with a closed bolt more easily, so it should not be much of a chore.
