I have a PMR-30 and I've been dying to try out the S&W version. I'm having carpel tunnel issues with my strong hand involving numbness, swelling and pain when trying to grip anything hard. I can do better with a full size handgun vs trying to contract my swollen fingers enough to hold onto a compact or smaller, also I don't yet know how much recoil I can control in this condition but probably not much. So I've been carrying my PMR-30 IWB lately but really would like to check out the M&P. They are very similar in size and have the same capacity (30 + 1) but I see some differences in how they may carry.
I used handgunhero.com for the below, if you are unfamiliar with it it s a great way to compare specs and dimensions between any two handguns.
So here are the specs:
And the visuals:
Superimposed the PMR over the S&W:
So the S&W appears to be a little longer, and that mostly comes from the grip, which is angled farther back than the KelTec. That means to me it could print more. The other thing I notice via the specs is that the S&W is quite a bit thinner, but with my current hand/gripping issues that's actually a negative in this case. The KelTec gives me a lot more to hold on to with my big (and now also fat) paws. The most significant difference of all however is the weight, which although lighter is typically better, the additional weight plus the "Tempo" gas recoil system in the S&W makes it even softer shooting/less muzzle flip than the PMR (as attested to by various Utube gun folk).
So in some things the KT looks better for me, in some the S&W does. The S&W does give a better quality feel in the hand (held one twice in gun stores) in no short measure due to the solid metal (steel?) slide and accompanying weight than the toy-like feel of the super lightweight PMR. My PMR runs great so I have no concerns about it's reliability, and I have seen nothing but good feedback from S&W owners in that regard.
Anyone know of a range around Alamance or Guilford counties that has a rental S&W 22 Magnum to try? I really want a back to back comparison shooting both.
