Hi guys. Ya'll may remember a few weeks ago we had a long running thread talking about a few issues I had been having with my 2 year old Polaris atv.

Thank you to everyone who commented and to @Pink_Vapor for coming to my house to help me troubleshoot it.

Based on y'all's recommendations, I was able to fix a few wiring issues, replace the battery, and a sensor. I got it running like brand new and sold it to a guy on craigslist for $6000.

I just drove away from a Yamaha dealer with a brand new Yamaha Kodiak 700 for $5999 plus tax. It's the base model, but i still got it for $1000 below msrp because of a Yamaha dealer rebate.

I just wanted to say thanks and let y'all know that everything worked out great!

Heck yeah! craigslist came through for ya

I just rode it for the first time. It was hard to not hammer down on it and feel the wind in my face. I just went two miles at about 20mph. I'll ride is softly and let it cool down several times before I start giving it some short bursts of speed. I know there is controversy on the internet, whether or not you should break in an atv. But I'm gonna start off slow, just in case...

Anyway... The Polaris had a 570cc engine and the new Kodiak has a 700cc engine.

Even going slow, I can already feel the difference in power. This thing is peppy and it really wants to go... And here's the crazy thing; this engine is bigger, stronger, faster, but it's also QUIETER than the old Polaris was...

I'm excited...

What do you guys think about break in periods on atvs, Yay or Nay?

A guy in my hometown that built racing engines (his brother was head of Chevy Racing) would always take them out the door of his shop onto the straight away and put the pedal to the floor.
He said either it will stay together or I'll build another.
I doubt the factory sees it that way.
I'd change the oil now and start getting on it a little more each day if it was mine.

They just assembled it this morning and put oil in it for the first time. I've driven it 2 miles. Do you think it needs an oil change already? The salesman at the Yamaha dealer said change the oil in 6 months and then once a year after that.

Also, the manual says that changing the oil filter is optional. That seems insane to me. I always change the filter when i do an oil change on anything.

Maybe run it again tomorrow and then change the oil and filter.
Who knows what crud was left in there during the build.
But this is My Opinion as to what I would do.
Wait and see what others say before doing anything.

Going from a Po-Po to Yamahammer is always a good day
I grew up on Yamaha atvs. My dad bought a 1994 Moto 4 350cc for me when I was 12 years old. I beat the crap out of it until I left for college, 6 years later. My dad still uses it on the farm, everyday, and he has never taken it to the shop for anything. 25 years that thing has been running non stop...

So, two years ago, I wanted to buy my first 4 wheeler for my family. I told my dad I was gonna get a Yamaha. He said to me, "Why don't you buy a Polaris? They are made in America! "

Well, we all know how that Polaris turned out...

Today, the Yamaha dealer (they are also a Polaris dealer) told me that Polaris atvs are assembled in MEXICO and Yamaha atvs are assembled in the state of GEORGIA!

I think that explains a lot...

Nice exchange!
When building an engine, the first time you run it for a bit, then drain the oil hot.
A couple things- the piston rings will be polishing the cylinder walls that have scratch marks to hold an oil film, and to have the rings seat in. Along with any lint from wipes/rags during assembly and any bearings initially wearing in you will have a lot of microscopic metal in the oil.

Anybody want to make a recommendation on a good winch for my new 2019 Yamaha Kodiak 700?

Of course, my first thought was WARN, but those things are too expensive.

I joined a Yamaha atv forum just to ask them.

They recommend:
- Tractor Supply Travelers 3500
- SuperWinch Terra 25
- Champion 3000

Anybody here have any experiences with these? Are there others I should be looking at?

I ended up putting a warn rated for 3k lbs on my utv. Haven't had any issues with it.

I want to save money. I always do things myself to try to save money.

But, I've never put on a winch. And, I've been reading online and it looks like a huge pain in the butt riding the wires, picking the correct mounting plate, etc. So, I'd probably pay someone else to do it.

But, when I bought the atv a few days ago, the salesman tried to sell me a no name brand winch for $300 plus $250 installation and i told him that was way too much ...

So, I'm still undecided. I'm handy. I know i could do it, but I'd rather pay a professional like 100 bucks to install it. But, i feel like i wouldn't be able to pay more than $100 for install without feeling sick to my stomach.

I believe they charged me for 2 hours of labor at 75 p/h when I purchased mine. I also adding a light bar at the same time so they said they cut me a deal on the labor. I'm sure they got paid either way but it was something I didn't have to worry with.

Yeah, I really would rather pay someone and not worry about it. But, dang, I'm cheap. I hate to pay someone else for something i can do.

Same here but I figured it would take me at least 4 hours to do lol. Even at two hours of my time I was out. That's two hours I could be spending with my family and to me that (like others I'm sure) has way more joy than messing around with something like that.

It'd take me 3 hours to do it the first time. And another two hours to re-do it a month later when it breaks...

I'd be better off paying someone to do it correctly the first time.

Sounds like its time for a CFF atv riding day
It's not fast but it does farm work like a boss.

I'm with you man. I've became really stingy of my time as I get older. I truly try to save it for the things that matter most.

Installing a winch is easy. Took less than two hours on the canam I had and that was with a 3 year old running around with any tool he could get his hands on. I used a warn 3000lb and never had any issues with it. My next one will likely be a travelers from tractor supply.

That thing is a beast!!!!!! and as for a winch get a warn and be done with it, buy once cry once.

Get about 5-10 hours on it and change the oil. After that change the oil about every 50 hours or so.
