Post your 2017 gardens

Update. Got a few zuks this weekend. And hoping that I don't have the tomato fungus
problem that I had last year.

The last time I had a garden it was a VERY wet spring/early summer just like now.

Finally got some blossoms on the squash plants. First garden I've ever done and I have no clue whether these plants look small or normal. But I can't wait for some fresh fried squash or squash casserole.

Well, those blooms are kind of big on a small plant. Not necessarily a bad thing though. If you don't think the bees are pollinating, or if you get squash that rots on the vine, look into hand pollinating them. It's easy, you just have to know which flower to get the pollen from and which one to pollinate.

Also, a buddy of mine told me yesterday to put egg shells around the squash and zucchini plants to keep squash bugs away. Worth a shot. I'm saving our and going to scatter them around the plants.

My zuchs are really small and shriveled.

I said my zucchini.

Just got back in. Unless the tomatillos take off, I'm done. And I hope they do but they are too small to put in the ground today. Put in about 9 squash plants, 4 cucumber plants and about 10 seeds. Hoping for a staggered harvest on those. And put in a row of okra. Got a load of zucchini in the house and have to figure out the best way to put them up. Cucumbers are coming on strong. We well can more beans Saturday too.

Was reading about hand pollinating yesterday. I have seen some bees around there, so it might not be necessary. I'll keep that in mind about the egg shells.

Instead of egg shells, order some diatomaceous earth. It dissuades lots of bugs. Also Di-Pel for worms which is BT bacteria. Both are organic and biological incecticides and very safe

Fruit. The plant itself is huge.

Google hand pollinating. The flower is not getting pollinated. If it's not pollinated the plant thinks the fruit is useless and let's it die. Also plant some bee attracting flowers close buy or get potted ones to put by the beds.

Hand pollinating is best done in the morning when the flowers are open. Short class, rub a q tip in the flower without a fruit ( male?) and then transfer the pollen to a flower with a fruit (female?). Not 100% on which is which.

Didnt prep the soil in the offseason, so i tried my hand at a bucket garden (a little ghetto, i know). Ive yielded a dozen or so green beans, but just got my first summer squash. Not too shabby for a bucket squash!20170608_204313.jpg

Finally caged my tomatoes, covered the rows with weed cloth, and planted a dozen more Romas for canning. Might plant some beans and see if I can keep the beetles off of them in August. Good thing about the piedmont, growing season lasts for a long while

We have the bettles on our beans. Leaves look like Swiss cheese.
I pulled a bunch off this morning for a swim in soapy water. ;) Hopefully get them under control.

Tomatoes, bean, cucumbers bell peppers.

Zucchini , carrots( with grass out of control) old lettuce/spinach beds.

Watermelon going nuts !

We are starting to get a few too. You can order ladybugs off eBay. But there is no guarantee they will stick around. Most of ours left. Maybe because we didn't have enough bugs for them to eat. If you find any around catch them and put them in the beans.

I'm also using Fertilome triple action in other beds. The only reason I'm not putting it on the beans is because we have a few lady bugs still working them.

This pic is from about 2 weeks ago. Already getting enough squash off these to have made squash/onions twice. Hard to believe how much come off 3 vines. 65D38578-6955-4ADE-8918-9B9DEA3E6E52.JPG

This was from this morning, now as soon as the vine is touched they run..

You know what the eggs and larva look like, right? Go after them too. We had them bad last summer.

Squash bug eggs. Rub them off/crush them with your finger. You could brush them off into soapy water too. But if they hit the ground the ants will take care of them.

Doesn't look like any of my eggplants.

Also, know the difference between squash bugs and soldier bugs. They look similar and even lay similar eggs. But soldier bugs are predators and you want to leave them alone if you can.

Canned 18 pints of zuchini relish today. Might fry up some green tomatoes tomorrow. Did a gallon of refrigerator pickles and canned 2 pints last week. More coming on soon. More beans to can by the end of the week.

OK, went out this morning and was looking at the 'mater plants...

My grape mater plant was missing a whole bunch of blooms & leaves on one upper stalk at the tip top.
Started looking closer and there were worms on it!
Green yucky looking things...I think they were hornworms.

They were on my other pepper plant and I guess I didn't realize it...there are no leaves or fruit left on that one.
Might as well chunk what's left and plant something else.

I put some Sevin Dust on all the plants to kill them, but I just don't like that on there.
Succeeded in killing the worms, but just a while ago, washed all the plants & deck off...didn't want the dogs getting into the dust on the deck.

Is there anything natural I can do to keep these buggers off my plants??

Plant Mexican Marigolds and basil with them.
I planted marigolds with them, maybe not enough.
Basil is in another container.

Should I get more basil & marigolds & plant with them?
There may be enough room to get a few in the pot with them..
