Predict the weather with Persimmons

Yup, we’re originally from the Wilkesboro/Ronda area and Great-Grandma always would check the “simmon” seeds. She told us kids that the trees never lied. If I remember correctly, Grandma said that
*a “spoon” shape in the seed told of a long, bad winter with a poor harvest and nothing to eat but broth.
*a”fork” told of a good harvest and plenty of meat to eat.
* a “knife” told of cutting winds and a sharp end.

My neighbor has a persimmon tree. I may have to ask for a fruit and test the theory.

All our persimmons have fallen before the frost for several years straight. It’s like nature has lost it’s timing.

I have them growing wild on some of my SC property.

I think I have 7 persimmon trees in the yard. I will need to see if I can find any fruit. I think they came down about two weeks ago.

Found a wooly worm/wooly bear in the driveway today that was almost all brown. That indicates a mild winter.

Persimmon tree down the road is so heavy with fruit, the branches are hanging low. May swing by and grab a couple.

@Pink_Vapor ,
In the case that you do find one:
(They love field edges)
Don’t eat one before the frost!
Just don’t!!!!
I didn't know about the weather thing, but this is wise advice. A raw persimmon will turn your mouth inside out. 😖

Highly trained PhD weathermen and weatherwomen can't forecast accurately more than a day ahead, supported by sophisticated computer modeling, radar and satellite monitoring. Am I really supposed to believe a fruit can magically tell the future?

since cubrock brought it up....
the wooly worm i saw last week
was ALL brown, too.

If anyone in the area wants some to transplant come on up. My field edges and the meadowstrip here at the house have a bunch. I must have bush hogged 10 the the week. Northern Graville, 20 miles north of Oxford.

I don't think I've seen a persimmon fruit or tree.
Thereby proving that you haven't been peeping in my bedroom window. (There's a loaded 'simmon tree directly outside it.)
😁

I've only got wild persimmons. Do they work? They only seem to be good for attracting yellow jackets.

how did you cut it?
i tried last night, but no joy.
even used a vise.

Dry it off and stand it up on it’s edge on a cutting board while putting a little bit of pressure on the “seam” that goes around the seed.
Then, using your palm, strike down onto the spine of the blade.
With practice, you’ll be splitting them cleanly right down the middle.
I take absolutely zero responsibility for any stitches incurred during the above mentioned procedure!

Ah ha, that’s you around the corner from our office!
I would have thought that was an orange tree.
