Got a weekend planned for Linville Gorge this coming weekend. Couple of routes planned out and a couple of places pinned for camping.

Not going ultralight like last trip, and taking the new kelty again with the usual shelter and bedding warbonnet ridgerunner, cloudburst tarp, top and bottom quilts. Mountainsmith trekking poles for both hiking and used as spreader bars for my hammock.

For clothing:
Dry on the fly pants
Dry on the fly shorts
Couple dri fit under armor shirts
2 pair of merino wool socks
Rain pants and jacket and a toboggan
Merrells low top hikers for shoes

Food is getting "cooked" for us since a few boys are working on their cooking merit badges (I've got a few things stored in reserve just in case). And of course coffee...

Cooking/meal prep:
Katadyn water filter
Solo stove 900 ml pot and trangia alcohol stove as a backup to natural materials.
40oz. Klean kanteen water bottle nested inside a GSI cup.
Few mountain house packs and snacks.

Muzzle loader season for deer is in right now in Burke county. Bring a couple blaze orange hats along. I wouldn't want to drag a deer out of there but who knows.

Any idea of the drive time from the closest hotel/motel??

Depending on your idea of hotel. 30 minutes, maybe. Closer to 45 depending on trial head. 1 to 1.5 hours to Boone or Morganton. You planning on hiking too? :p

Funny story...

As I was driving down to Atlanta Sunday about a half hour down the road from the house the lightbulb lights up in my melon and says: hey Dumas, guess what you forgot to bring? Yup. 10mm still in the safe. Dammit

I actually thought the same thing. Normal vortex camo hat is with me, but info have a blaze hat in my tool box. Good idea for sure.

You won't forget it this time!

Don't forget the trail mix! Unfortunately, I found out the hard way that a 5 lb bag of trail mix feels a lot heavier after a 10 miles trek.
Lol

I grabbed a bag of trail mix but it certainly not the epic portion size that you brought! How much did that pack weigh?

Great trip. Didn't get very many pictures, but did manage to get bit or stung by something that felt like someone hitting me in the hand with a hammer. Good times...

Left Atlanta about 1:30 last Friday, was reminded why I hate Atlanta almost immediately.

By the time I got there our original planned spot to grab was already taken. So as usual we improvise, adapt, and overcome. Found another little spot tucked in the woods that had been used and set up there instead (as usual for us - set up in the dark). Next day

Boys had a great time, good hiking weather. I didn't bother with my phone after a couple of those pics above and just left it in the truck.

I'm sure someone ( @HK_fanboy ) got some good pics while hiking up to table rock and the other loop.

No casualties other than me getting bit, and one new scout not drinking enough. Other than that, I'd give it 2 thumbs up, and would go back again. Hopefully not having to come from working the week before I'm Atlanta would be a plus. Lol

It was a nice trip. I believe this Linville Gorge trek was a lot better/more scenic than the other options the boys came up with. The >1000 ft elevation change was challenging at times (at least for the ones who braved the trail). I did get some great pics that I will post once I figure out how. I think for the next hiking trip it's my turn to stay at camp and hangout in my hammock (pun intended).

And I got the camp cleaned up, and some wood for the fire. So there!
