Last year I got stuck in Cataloochee without many small flies. My normal size 14s didn't get it done. Figured I would stock up on some smaller parachutes before our trip in August.

Size 16 based on a fly a buddy ties.

And some 18s in yellow.

I don't normally tie small stuff. My head hurts now. Got about 14 tied so far.

Is that a wet or dry fly?
I used to tie something similar using the guard hair from a whitetail. Course that was a dry.

Parachute style dry fly. The little brookies in the park were snubbing my normal fries last year. Going a bit more prepared this time. I'll tie some Adams style too. Already have some olives.

My experience in cataloochee says that yellow will be the bomb. Look up a "Stimulator" pattern, tie a #14/16 with a yellow body and you'll be a happy camper.

I can tell you with some certainty, the higher elevation fish just like to swat at a 14. But they don't take them. The fish in the valley will. Sometimes. Last year they wanted everything small. And yellow anywhere in the park is a good color. Orange in the fall too.

I know some fly tiers use the hair from squirrel tails. If you ever need some, give me a shout. I'll save some this year when we hunt them.

I wouldn't mind learning to fly fish and go after speckled trout. I usually throw lures like jerk baits for them. I've watched guys fly fishing in salt water but never tried it.

I have a lot of hides around from critters I have killed. I've even stopped and picked up road kill for the hides. lol

Come on up, I'll take you out.

Small mountain streams are a good place to start. But it's a world of difference to saltwater casting from a boat. Just an FYI. But the tug is the drug.

How close are you to Fayetteville? The John E Pechmann center puts on introductory fly fishing classes a few times a year. They have stocked ponds where they fish.

Can't track down any small clubs down that way. Might be a trout unlimited or Federation of Fly Fishers in the area. Most of the folks are pretty helpful with new guys.

Good ties...good camera work, too. My adams love to crowd the hook-eye.

Being so near Caster's, you ever copy Dave Hise's patterns? The Heterogenius is my go-to dropper, and a favorite to tie. My vise is over there giving me that "neglected" look.

I'm a pro at crowding eyes. But can't crowd them much on the parachute.

I get out to Casters occasionally. I use a couple of his patterns. Mostly some of his unsavory ones. Lol. His realistic ties are insane. He's gotten really good at it.
