I think we're about ready to drop cable. One problem I anticipate is losing the ability to time shift shows we would be getting OTA.
Any suggestions for a dvr?
I found this link
https://www.digitaltrends.com/home-...olutions-for-cord-cutters-version-1424116425/

Tivo seemed like a great deal right up to the $15/mo subscription.

Right now we have a moxi that distributes video to 3 tvs and allows multi show recording etc. It would be great to have something similar for ota to simplify the antenna install.

Might want to check out channelmaster.com to see if that fits your needs. Cost a little upfront but no monthly charges. I have one of their $10 indoor antennas and it works well (at least when I tested it...haven't had to use it). They now offer a DVR.

I dropped ATT verse a few weeks ago. Ive got amazon prime so it comes with the amazon tv. I am running fire sticks with sling tv on them. Love the ala carte style of sling. Mine is $25 a month for all the channels we watch. I get 21 local channels on a digital antenna I got on amazon. It literally saved me $109 a month to switch. Really like the sling tv it has live tv and on demand stuff for each channel.

I'm getting ready to drop Rectum, after I just realized my (hold over business class internet which sucks) and the TV we barely watch cost me over $300 last month as the price keeps climbing. Not ready to cut it totally, but going to scale way back. Figure I can switch to the local phone comp that has fiber service and save abou $200.00

Dropped U-verse a month ago and got sling. For $5 extra you get a DVR. I haven't missed anything yet.

I just need uverse for the internet pipe, no tv, no phone. got quoted 50 bucks a month and then ill add some tv app like sling on top for my fire stick. Thats my thought anyway, you guys have any other setups? No matter what you need the internet so for $50 I get the 300 fiber

I'm very happy with my fire stick and sling tv and digital antenna. Works great saves me $$$ and is simple to use. The only channel I don't have that I miss is discovery.

My problem is receiving reliable OTA where I live. I'd need a tower like the one beside the 73 going down to Asheboro.

:(

I really miss the History, TLC, Discovery, Velocity, Spike channels. Although most have gone down hill but they occasionally have good shows. We just have Netflix/hulu..have amzon prime but haven't use prime tv.

Sling has history, a&e, and several others I watch but not discovery

Roku, sling, Hulu, and Amazon prime over two years ago, have never looked back towards cable for one second.
So can you see the network shows the next day on hulu? I'm doing a trial on it now and am seeing very few new shows. (at least ones I want to watch)

I also have netflix and can't justify having both.

I got rid of Netflix. We love Hulu always something to watch. I'm watching nfl on sling right now. Skiing will soon have my favorite hockey back on. Amazon we watch sometimes.

Btw, Designated Survivor seems pretty good, just started watching that.

I also have live local on sling.

Been on Direct TV NOW from AT&T a week after they ran fiber optic in my area,
$40 a month has everything I watched when we had Time Warner now known as Spectrum for $129 month.
I'm saving over $150 a month combined vs twc cable, ATT DSL, land line with long distance.

Update: The above $40 package also has DVR in the cloud included.

Have IP phone from AT&T, 300MB fiber internet up and down speed, will drop it to 100MB
next year when my promo ends.

I have two OTA antennas in the attic over the garage but we don't watch too much OTA.
Also have Amazon Prime for movies now and then.

Haven't had cable/satellite in over 15 years and don't miss it at all.
Stay at a hotel and it's surprising just how annoying 8min of programming, 5 min of commercials, then the next two mi of programming is catching you back up is.

Amazon Prime and YouTube TV. YouTube TV has local Raleigh networks for my area (based on location what local networks you get), they keep adding new channels for the same price, and only 1 package (up to 3 devices, separate dvrs and accounts). I would have needed both packages from Sling to get the different channels I wanted. All for about $37 per month (byo internet).

We had direct TV for 15 years it was 79.00 for everything when we first got it, when I cut off service 3 years ago my bill had reached 160.00 a month.
Wineguard digtal antenna picks up 29 channels and the sub channels that you don't get with locals on the dish make it worth having, and an Android box with Kodi, mobdro, Showbox, don't feel like I'm missing anything except some of the Carolina games during college b ball season. Hadn't needed a DVR because everythings on the box next day

Out here, in the untamed wilderness of Stokes county, cable isn't available. I had DirectTV 15 years ago. But, it was way overpriced even then. I put up a good antenna with a rotor, and use Netflix. Problem solved.

as posted in other topics....we cut the cord when Spectrum more-than-doubled TWC's price.
here's what we do:
1. Sports. watched the Braves and NASCAR on the internet today.
2. Movies. our library has sooo many DVD's. check out 6 at a time. free.
3. Other. YouTube has most of it. Daily Motion, etc. have the rest.

We’ve had Hulu for about 3-4 months now, it has about 50-60 live channels and cloud based dvr. I’m pretty satisfied
Good to know. I pared back my service with the company formerly known as TWC, but I’ve been getting increasingly irritated with stuff I’m paying for just not working. If I see, “program not available, please try later” one more time I might throw the remote at the TV (just kidding). The latest thing is the on demand, where if you pause it more than momentarily it restarts back to the beginning.

Resurrecting this thread I've been a customer of Directv for 11 years. With Dish before that. As you all know the price keeps going up. For the last 3 years it was the game of calling to cancel, they would lower the price, the next year it would go back up. Rinse and repeat. Last year they lowered the price and dropped some channels. Bill went from $160/month to $138/month. I have 20MB internet speed through CenturySTINK. Still have issues when it rains hard but for the most part it does what i need it to (until the new company runs internet out her in 3 months or so. 1 GB here I come). Got to thinking. SlingTV is offering the orange and blue package for $25 month for 3 months. Extra $5 for DVR. 4 connections. Have Netflix. My kids play games or watch Youtube more than tv. Called up DirectTV 2 days ago to cancel as my billing cycle is today. Had to go through all the hassle of them trying to keep me and would add this, that, etc. Nope. Cancel please. Checked today and it is still on. Called them and said to turn it off. Was told it would be turned off at midnight tonight. We'll see. Here's what I'm going with.

SlingTV 3 month promotional package (4 connections) for $30/month including DVR for 3 months. They have most of the channels we do watch, including Discovery. If I don't like it at the end of 3 months I'll go with Playstation Vue that has 5 connections. YouTube is out as they don't work on Firestick/boxes. Plus they just raised their price.

Have an indoor antenna that scans 28 channels. Ordered the ultimate tv outdoor antenna on Ebay from Danny Hodges out of Georgia. $85. After looking at reviews of store antennas I decided to go with this one instead.

$85 (antenna) + $30 (Sling) + $12 (Netflix)= $127. Not including the price of internet because I had that anyway. A little more than one month of Directv and the antenna is a one time price. May end up dropping Netflix as we are Amazon Prime members anyway. Got to have internet but don't have to have Directv or Dish. When the new internet company expands out my way I'll go with them for internet. Have a house phone out of habit. Will be dropping that and Centurylink internet.

Ultimate outdoor tv antenna comparison test

How to make it:

Most of y'all could probably build your own antenna. I don't have the materials nor the time. I don't mind paying a man for his time so ordered one already pre-made.

Sling now has Discovery. One of the reasons I went with them.

Hulu lets you stream only on one devices at a time unless you pay $9.99 for unlimited devices. With 3 kids, that's a no from me. Sling combo has 4 connections. PS Vue has 5 for the same price of one connections of Hulu + Live tv.

I did read online that some people posted they were able to stream 2 connections at once.

Spike TV is now Paramount TV. Still using Direct TV Now, pretty good now, no more drop outs and stock ticker moves as it should.

We done cut the mutha. Right now we have Youtube tv, Philo and Netflix. That is more than enough and saved me about $100/month vs AT&T. Still need to reconnect the off-air antenna to get HD local channels if need be. Was going to go DirecTV’s streaming service but they changed it 1 day before we called. We had DirecTv and/or AT&T for about 20 years. Bye, bye fools. For a half way decent offer we would have stuck around.

We may add Philo. The only channel that it does not have that that my son watches is USA. 45 channels for $16/month and 56 channels for $20/month is a deal in todays cable climate.

We cut the cord 3 years ago.. tv programming is crap fir the most oart, but a few things we still like. We use hulu now. Had issues with direct tv now.

We got rid of our satellite and everything all together, we bought some Amazon firesticks and loaded them with some apps that allow us to watch movies, shows and even live TV if we want. All you need is wifi, no more monthly TV bills and we live it!
