Process for Getting a VA card?

Can someone please recount the process to get a VA card? I'd like to have them as an option.

I did the enrollment back in Y2K. Had to go to my regional hospital (in Asheville) with my DD214 and fill out a bunch of forms. Have been in their system since then.

I'm not sure how things work these days.

Are you guys trying to get service connected or just get in the system?
I finally received my service connection a couple years ago, so I can offer some assistance with the process.

I just want to get in the system as a backup for my primary health insurance.

Are you enrolled? That's the first step, fill out a va form 10-10.

Enrollment is the first step then. You you have your dd-214 then I believe you can still do your enrollment online. I did mine completely online and only went to the VA for my examination for my service connection issues.

You cant submit your dd214 online, and having your service info available will depend on when you served.
