Anyone going to Project Appleseed events?? I am signed up for Feb 1-2nd @ Charlotte with a couple friends. Trying to bring a few friends, would like to make a few distinguished scores and chase the 250. I've herd the ones in Ramseur are worth making the trip but I won't be able to attend til spring.

I have done several, all in Ramseur. Highly recommended. 250 is not easy (understatement) but you will have a blast trying.

I've done it once and need to do it again. I had the wrong sling setup and spent way too much time dicking with it and related gear, missing a fair amount of the course. Make sure you come with a plain Jane GI sling, nothing more.

Think l'll sign up for one this spring in Ranseur. Anyone else want to do the same PM me and maybe we can get a CFF contingent down there.

I'd like to go back and do it again. Took my son around 5 years ago when he was 11 to Ramseur and had fun. I also think I was the only one to shoot rifleman that day which was pretty cool.

I went to the one in Ramseur Dec 21-22, it was a great experience! I'll definitely go again, just not sure when yet.

Let me know which ones peak your interest I'm pretty open after March for any of them

They just ended their christmas 40% off deal. I tried to buy some, but (a) they didn't have the dates posted, and (B) i would have had to name the people on each certificate... and i ahve no idea who i'd be taking with me yet.

Friend Number1
Friend Number2
Etc...

I did that in 2018, forgot about 'em, and squeaked in last month. The guys in Ramseur were pretty easy-going about it. My buddy had something come up & couldn't make it, but (they) said just use it another time. I'm pretty sure they're far more interested in getting folks to participate than die-hard enforcement of gift cert exp dates!

I've only been to one, but I got a really positive feeling about the group and their mission. Doubts? Worries? Contact them; I'm sure they'd to every thing they can to help you get to an event.

What do you need for one of these events.

They are based around the .22lr most people use a 10/22. It can be done with a bolt but with the time constraints most people choose a semi-auto. For the most part its a run what you brought, no restrictions or classes on the .22lr as far as set up. They have some restrictions based on event (KD's allow center fire).... The main you need is a rifle, a brick of your favorite .22lr a G.I or M1 type sling and willingness to learn and enjoy. Some more info here https://appleseedinfo.org/how-to-prepare/

^^^Yes to the above. At Ramseur, they had carpet remnants you can use for a shooting mat. I got a shooting mat for the occasion and was glad I did - quite comfy over a piece of carpet! I think they recommend 400 rounds of ammo. MAKE SURE IT WORKS IN YOUR RIFLE. I brought plenty, but had some that didn't feed in either rifle. Learning that wasted some time...

Don't be ashamed to use a scope if you need one.

A GI-style sling & sling swivels that work with it.

It was winter when I went, so I didn't need elbow pads... nevertheless, my left elbow got a little raw from adjusting (and adjusting, and adjusting... :)) in the prone position.

Their website has a checklist that's pretty spot-on.

The vast majority of Appleseed shooters use 22's, but at Ramseur (and many other ranges) any cartridge under 8mm (IIRC) may be fired. It is not unusual for there to be at least a couple of people firing AR's in 5.56, and I've seen more than one dedicated shooter fire 308's or 7.62x54R's or what have you. I don't remember anyone making through a whole day with a mosin--the instructors often have loaner 22's available that start to look pretty attractive to many center fire shooters sometime after lunch on Saturday--but you're welcome to shoot them if you like. Bolt and all. I've never fired an autoloader at an Appleseed, except an AR at a known distance shoot. At the 25 yard events I have only shot my old Marlin 25N bolt gun, and I never felt like it posed a problem for me. There are procedures in place for shooters who bring tube fed guns, too.

It really is a run what you brung program. Instructors will not make fun of you for using a scope! :) The only real equipment-based issue is the sling. A lot of the instruction at Appleseed has to do with using the sling as a marksmanship aid, and if you only have a carry strap on your rifle, or worse don't have usable sling studs, you won't be able to take advantage of that knowledge. So if I could make one suggestion for anyone thinking about an Appleseed, it would be to make sure you have a GI-type sling that can be attached appropriately to your rifle.

A cheap foam sleeping bag mat can serve you well for the prone part of the day, FYI. And if you bring elbow pads, don't bring the hard plastic ones, you'll be rolling all around.

If you're chasing the Rifleman patch, then a well-designed Liberty Training Rifle is a help, I will admit. But if you're going there to learn some important lessons about our American heritage and history, as well as to learn some outstanding traditional American rifle marksmanship, then your old Marlin 60 with buckhorn sights will do just fine. Don't stress the gear, just get there. :) Not trying to preach, but I wish someone had told me this. It took me a couple of years to put together the money to outfit two 10-22's as reasonable facsimiles of the liberty training rifle so I could let my two older sons shoot them, while I lugged along my old Marlin bolt gun. Silly. Not that the modifications were bad, but they held me back from going out there and getting on the line for a long time. Heck, even if you don't own a rifle at all you can shoot an Appleseed. Contact the shoot boss for the event you'd like to hit and ask about a loaner. There's about a 100% chance you'll be all taken care of.

I went to one years ago where one intrepid soul shot a Mosin carbine the entire first day. He was NOT a happy camper and came back with a 22 the next day. Garand, AR, M1A, 1903, etc... no problem, but that short lightweight 7.62x54R beat him up pretty good.

It was also the loudest thing I have heard at an Appleseed. Worse than an AR with a brake and I have heard a lot of them.

Yes, if you havenā€™t been before, take a 22 for the first day to learn the mechanics. If you are doing great and want try keeping NPOA through recoil, bring a centerfire the second day by all means. I would say to make rifleman with a 22 semi first, then try other rifles you want to. 223, 30, bolt (a CZ bolt in 22 is fun!), whatever floats your boat. No substitute for getting the basics down cheaper and with less noise and recoil though, IMO.

My first appleseed, a guy switched from a .22 to an ar with a tanker style break on it (jp I think). And it liked to have took my breath away the first time he shot it beside me.

Word to the wise: don't, as in do not, launch your tube mag plunger forward of the firing line during the AQT.

But if you do, remember to sit that course of fire out while engaging your SDSoH. (Self Deprecating Sense of Humor).

Good project....however the founder is a grade A douche
How is that relevant? Really? It isn't like it's a profit making venture. Whatever you think of what he did decades ago, he has spent a LOT of time and money making it happen and grow. That is worth a lot. It does great work teaching marksmanship and American heritage - just leave it at that.

I guess it's relevant because many people don't know the guy or what did/does and how he destroyed a range/club. The money he spent likely wasn't his in the first place and yeah it is a profit making thing....he's not doing it for free.

Like I said good project...just a shitty leader.

Do you have reliable and reputable sources to link to for backing up your assertions? Otherwise, you're just crapping all over a program that teaches good marksmanship fundamentals and good history lessons - which would seem to make you the douche.

Ask anyone who was around when he ran off the old Riverside Gun club...its not like its a secret or anything....

note I'm not crapping all over the program..I have no issues with the program...hell the old RGC were the beta testers for it. Leave the .22s at home and do it with an M14..I did.

Hearsay is crap. Put up or shut up.

A lot of Appleseed conversations tend to devolve into discussions of the Ballad of Fred, and that makes some sense, because he is the founder of the program and for many years was kind of the full on chief and head bottle washer and whatnot. But for whatever it may be worth, Appleseed has very little to do now with Ramseur and as I understand it very little to do now with Fred. It's a national program that I think has started to outgrow its origins. Whatever Fred's sins may or may not have been--something I've only ever really heard rumors about and for that reason try to ignore for my part--I think Appleseed has really come into its own now as its own thing.

How long does it take apple trees to grow from seeds to produce apples?

Went about 2 years ago now at CRPC. We had a lot of fun and I managed to make rifleman twice on the last day. I used an old 10/22, set up pretty much like they recommend (Liberty Training Rifle: https://appleseedinfo.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/LTR.pdf ) and it worked great. Liked the TSR200 Tech Sights. A friend brought is grandfather's old tube fed and had a less-fun time, but still enjoyed it.

At CRPC you will stand/kneel/lay on the concrete all day so, if you are fragile like me, I would recommend some sort of mat. Just don't bring something huge as there is not a lot of room between shooters (nor the poles holding up the roof). I used a Midway mat and my friend used the Cabela's mat and they were both about as big as you could possibly fit there.

Dang, now you got me wanting to figure a way out to make the February event at CRPC!!

Don't know Fred or the story behind it/him (this is the first I have ever heard of it, but the stuff I read makes him sound sketchy at best) , but Appleseed is a great experience. Can't wait until my kids are old enough to go!
