PSA playing Century's game. Now with pics.

I just had a M&P where the barrel nut was barley tight.

Front sight gas block was tough to get off but with a good punch and a 3lb mini sledge, it worked out.

Well at least you're learning some stuff right?
What's the plan now? Cheap new barrel back in the same config or something totally different?
Same barrel, cheap Chinese free float handguard, some sort of spraypaint scheme.

Apparently PSA cranked the barrel nut down more than they should have. Despite being in an upper vice block, threads are galled, upper is cracked.

Quick and nasty color test on the broken upper to make sure I have the right paint.

I do.

Check out Acme Machine. They have surprisingly nice handguards for around $30. I've got a couple, and like them.
Ended up snagging one on Ebay for $30 and change, but bookmarked for future use.

I don’t know if “right” is the adjective I’d use! :D
Well, I'm going for a certain aesthetic.

It needs EL wire lighting in the handguard.

Edit: if that becomes a thing it's cheap and easy, even I can do it. It just might melt a bit if you mag dump.

That's right up my alley-I like my parts like I likes my coffee; cheap and black.
Just kidding, I don't like coffee.

I've got a barrel wrench coming- I'm going to put the cheapest Chinese free float handguard on it I can find and then rattle can the whole thing. May change the stock, but I'm not sure yet. I oiled it so I'm not sure how easily I can prep it for paint.
Soak that nasty bish in mineral spirits.

I'm happy to report that this rifle is a great shooter despite everything it's been through and the complete lack of care in selecting cheap Chinese parts from Ebay.

I will say I'm also pretty well impressed by the Anderson no door/forward assist upper. The machining is super smooth compared to the PSA upper it replaced, and I'm pretty well set on buying another just like it for a pistol build.

5 sets of e-mails back and forth now and I'm still waiting on a sticker to ship this thing back.

In the meantime I went ahead and bought a 20 inch Windham "Gov't" rifle. I think I'm done with PSA.

Yeah, count me out on thier AK's too.

I have been done with them for over a decade for reasons that mirror yours, cheap they are, a bargain, they are not

Coming back to this thread rather than start a new one.

I enjoyed putting this together, and I'd like to do it again, but using good quality parts. Right now I'm looking at the Faxon 20 inch gunner barrel with a pinned on gas block:
https://aimsurplus.com/faxon-firearms-20-in-gunner-223-5-56-4150-qpq-nitride-barrel

If I were to lay hold of this rail to put on over it:

Can I be sure that the barrel nut will pass over the gas block when I go to install it?

Can I be sure that the barrel nut will pass over the gas block when I go to install it?

no, the gas block will have to come off. it will come from the factory "pinned" but not "set" if that makes sense. tap the pin out and remove set screws (if this block has them) they wont be torqued.

i prefer to set the pin before torquing down the screws when assembling.

that particular rail will work with the faxon block but i have seen some low pro adjustable not fit under the atlas.
