But if you're willing to walk in further than most, scout in advance, and can actually hunt without having a corn pile or feeder....it sure is satisfying. This is me at Pee Dee NWR yesterday. My wife snapped a few pics without me knowing it and I like this one.[IMG]

Have one of those wheeled carriers, they sure are nice. I may be forced onto public land pretty soon. Damn tired of waiting for some land to lease within a decent drive.

I've been fortunate to have access to "family" land for the past 30 years.

    Consider me spoiled.

I've hunted nothing but public land since the late '90s ... mostly out of necessity (aka lack of other options). For me, every hunt is a good hunt -- but some are more pleasant than others. (For instance, first day of bear season in Nantahala was insanely crowded with all manner of yahoos the last time I tried it. )

Hunted game lands and National Forest the majority of my life till I could buy my own hunting land about 20 years ago. Hunted Pisgah extensively. Yep, if you are willing to walk a little farther and work a little harder, it can be good. Make you tough too!

Apparently there is a two acre island in lake Norman that is a pretty good place to hunt. You just have to get out to it.

Kayaks and John boats can be purchased for reasonable prices. May not be as pretty or fast as other options but they get the job done.

The problem is it is off of the point area and I'm not sure where the closest public access would be. Only reason I know anything about it is a guy was harassing a couple hunters out there on his jet ski.

Heres another public land story from today. After we waited on the rain to stop all afternoon, we got out about 2 and started walking in. 2 trucks came driving past our truck and basically hunted on top of us. I had 3 others with me, but I left and went to my backup spot, but I admit I was pretty pissed off. I parked the truck in a spot that you had to drop a wheel off the dead end road to get around me. Guess it was worth wrecking your suspension to hunt on top of someone on a nearly 9000 acre refuge....

Well I went and killed another one, and they left empty handed. Karma is a thing.
