Friday night on the way home from work in my 2003 avalanche z71 at about 60 mph I hit the brakes the truck gave a shudder and the pedal went to the floor with the brake light coming on truck did not slow down. I was able to get it stopped and when I looked under it there was brake fluid dripping from everywhere. I blew a line at the front of the ABS block spent the next 3 days getting parts, replacing lines and bleeding brakes. Just happy I was able to get stopped without hitting anyone or anything
 
Whew! Scared me just reading about it! Glad you made it back in 1 piece.
 
Those year Chevy trucks and SUV are known for brake line issues. I had the same happen twice on the 2004 suburban i used to drive. That’s a terrible feeling. Anyone that has one in those years that hasn’t had brake line issues needs to inspect their vehicles cause you will eventually have an issue
 
I had a front drum brake blow up on a 64 SS409 as I was leaving a florist picking up some prom flowers. Musta been 70 or 71. Had just done an overhaul & hadn't got on it yet. I backed out of the florist & put it in 1st stomped it & popped the clutch & grabbed 2nd with it sideways. Stop sign coming up so I let off & hit the brakes & they went to the floor. Scary shut indeed. Got it stopped & brAke fluid all under left front. Every brake part inside the hub was loose. Plugged the left flex line with a sheet metal screw & a leather washer. Drove my date that night in a bad ass car that when you hit the brakes you better have both hands on the wheel. And that's tough when my gear shifting hand wanted to be other places.

Had it happen in my f250 not long ago. Good thing about a diesel is you just hit the tow button on the shifter and left off the accelerator and you’re good.

If I’d been coming up on a stop sign it would have sucked but it down shifted on its own.

Mine was a blown up caliper. Shredded itself. Good times.

Mine just froze up a while back, seems to be common on these trucks
 
Glad you came out ok its Not a good feeling had a rear line bust on my old 99 ram 2500. Road brine and steel brake lines are not a good combo. It was a nc truck its whole life just thin steel line material and it doesn’t take much for one to pop if it gets a little rust.

How can this happen? Maybe the new stuff is different, but the cars I worked on split the brakes at the master cylinder. Even if one line broke, you still had brakes to two wheels.

Lets rephrase what happened so all understand. It didn't blowout from the normal pressures but because it had corroded the metal to the point the line split because the metal became to thin. I see this al the time on cars from the rust belt and the coast. Pickups near the bed and rear of the cab, people will let mulch dirt or whatever collect in their and on top of the lines. The moisture is trapped so it will rust through the lines.

not rust but it looked like it had rubbed on the frame and made a thin flat week spot
 
That will do it to. They will also rot from the inside out if the brake fluid is not changed often enough. The same thing is what makes calipers freeze up when it is not the slide pins.
