I recently got my VA disability rating back after months of waiting, due to the pact act it took forever, that's aside the point. With 90 percent as most you know who have a rating I can go to the VA for anything even if its un related to a service related injury. My main question is, do I still need health insurance? I have heard my mixed things about it. What if I was in a horrible car wreck and they took me to just a regular hospital. Something on the VA says something about reporting within 72 hours and your fine. But there are also things that say the VA might not cover those types of costs. Any wisdom or past experience is much needed thanks. Really trying to avoid paying for an insurance plan if I can. But the last thing I want is a huge medical bill.

My dad served in the Navy 60 to 68. Four years ago he came down with ITP. He went from fairly mobile and active to completely bedridden. He spent 5 solid months in the VA. Of that 5 months he spent 6 weeks at Duke University hospital where they washed the antibodies out of his blood. His medical bills had to have been in the millions. His only medical coverage was through the VA. People can say what they want to about the VA but they have taken care of my dad. I told mom that I wouldn't gripe about paying my federal taxes after what they did.

I’m waiting on a claim for cancer under PACT Act, really hoping it doesn’t take 6 months.

Well your going to be front loaded, it shouldn’t take very long. The average wait time for a normal claim is 150 days, everyone filling a pact act claim is put ahead of the regular claims. However with how many people the pact act is open to now, it could be go either way.

Ok, so legally No, you do not need Obama care.
Every year you will get a letter stating that your VA coverage meets the minimum essential requirement.

How far are you from an emergency room?
(I have used just the VA for a long time.)

If it is life threatening and the ambulance takes you to a regular hospital the VA is supposed to cover it.
@Diablos what say you ?

va healthcare is credible coverage under medicare (min essential coverage), so you dont need to carry any additional insurance (and you cant have an obamacare stipend while in receipt of va benefits, they make you cancel them).

as to emergency care, yes va will cover it. i myself have used it, the insurance person (for lack of a better term) at the hospital will take your va info and notify/bill va (make sure to keep yourself active in the va system in order to keep your mission act urgent care benefits active)

if you need a letter stating the min cover, you can download one from the va app or call 855-488-8440 and ask for a credible coverage letter (calling is slower)

Oh I still live in Fayetteville, so there is VA ER on Ramsey street at the hospital. It’s extremely easy to use and they are super quick. Quality of care is great as well. I’m more worried about a situation that happens away from from here, me and my wife travel often.

you can go to any va in the nation, if you know beforehand you can coordinate as described in the link below. if its a spur of the moment thing, you can still go but that va hospital wont be able to "see" you in their computer system as you're not registered, call the 855 number and update your preferred facility, the hospital will then be able to "see" you, pull your information into their system and get you seen by a doc.

All of my medical drugs everything is from the VA. I have a outstanding medical center in Johnson City TN. I agree with all the guys above in the information.
The only thing I can add is I think the only thing you can't get (at 90%) is your dental. It takes 100%. But the VA is working on that the last I heard.

I do have my retirement insurance full complete coverage that's 900.00 a month only for my wife. Plus paying that BS medicare. another 2 hundred plus a month.

I make sure the VA gets all the other insurance coverage information ever year. I have been told that Blue Cross does support the VA because of that.
I have never got any better care as I have at my VA for the past 15 years.

there are other ways to obtain dental at va (voc rehab, go inpatient, POW, and others) but generally a 100% rating or S/C for dental is required. i doubt that will ever change given the nature of the dental bu$ine$$

and you're not required to pay that $200 for medicare unless you want to, you can drop (as long as you send them that credible coverage letter)

The problem with dropping it is then (My Retirement Blue Cross Blue Shield) will refuse to pay what medicare would normally cover. And ironically that's more than them ass wipes pay.

SO rather than fight I go with it because I want 100% coverage for my wife.

Yep I forgot about POW and not familiar with the others so I learned something on those.
