Question on shipping ammo

Does the ammo have to be in original boxes, or can I pack it loose in a smaller box, tape it up and then place that box in another to ship?

Yes, I did that with 2 boxes of ammo that went with a gun I sold a few months ago.
You will need to add a "ORM-D" label, available on line, that you print out and attach to the outside box.

I believe I can just do the black and white diamond as well, instead of that label.

So the loose ammo packed that way is fine?

Put it in a zip-lock bag and tape it well and all should be good to go.
