I have a question. Why do some of the replies I get come through the conversation icon and some of them come through the alert icon?

The bell icon shows activity in a open thread you have posted in or are following. Alerts next to the envelope icon are regarding private messages (aka “conversations”) you started and someone replied to, or that someone sent to you.

No sir.

Convos stay private between the recipients. There is no co-mingling between open threads and private messages.

Convos stay private between the recipients. There is no co-mingling between open threads and private messages.

I think the answer fo his question is “yes”.

the envelope = convo = private
the bell = posts = public

...and FWIW, convos are indeed private. Staff cannot see them.

You have the option to add a person to the convo, or if you click Report on one, that single message (not the whole convo) is visible behind the curtain.

If someone gives a thumbs up to your reply in a private message, you will see it on the bell icon. If someone replies to your private message, you’ll see it in the envelope icon
