Ramseur for Project Appleseed

I'm gonna be in Ramseur this weekend (12/21 & 12/22) for my first Project Appleseed event. 'Bout time!

Anyone else going?
I went back in September. You are going to enjoy it, weather should be good and the instruction is excellent. Would definitely do it again if it wasn't right before Christmas.

Enjoy it all! Listen. Don't waste time - load mags between strings. Concentrate on what they are teaching and demonstrating and then focus on that in the following strings of shooting, because there will be some new more stuff right after that.

I have been to many many many events that trained and taught me about a WIDE variety of things. This event was one of the best I have ever attended. I loved it. I hope you do, too.

I am an idiot who knows very very very little about a wide variety of topics. Accurate shooting is certainly there on that list. It is, as many know, a civilian version of the USMC stationary rifle shooting training. The instructors were patient, competent, knowledgeable and very thorough.

I need to go back. Good luck and best wishes.

Thanks for the well wishes, y'all! I'm really looking forward to it.

I cobbled together a LTR (out of a 10/22, of course) and sighted it in yesterday. Got some good groups, but didn't get the POA = POI exactly before we got last call at the range. (Which is probably good, since Frostbite the Noman was starting to shake my elbows...) I also weeded out some borrowed mags that didn't function worth a [naughty word]. I have fewer than I'd like, but I think they're reliable.

I've opted for open sights (Tech Sights) despite my aged eyeballs. Since I don't (yet) wear glasses at every waking moment, I'd like to qualify w/o magnification. However, I'm bringin' the scoped Marlin 60 just in case...

One thing, bring some elbow pads. Seriously. Working prone positions for two days wore the skin off both my elbows and they were bleeding for two days. Of course, I was wearing short sleeves at that time, but it's a mistake I won't make again.

This is solid advice. Don't get the hard plastic capped military style either, they recommend you not use those kind because it's hard to maintain stability rocking around on them.

1st day was a resounding success! Ansolutely great group of volunteer instructors and the attendees were a great bunch of guys as well. My neighbors were very gracious when I shot their targets... I enjoyed the history, some of which was familiar, but it's always good to get a refresher. It was pretty cold, but not unbearable.

Turns out 3 layers of sleeves over a shooting mat over a carpet remnant were adequate for my elbows. Wish I'd had the same advantage for my eyeballs! I am definitely at my visual limit with open sights on the 300yd and further-sized targets.

That said, my groups improved dramatically over the course of the day, even though I started with a string of FTF's and a non-feeding mag that essentially left me with a single shot rifle. I sequestered the crap mag & switched ammo and the 10/22 functioned fine the rest of the day.

I brought only 22LR this time, so I probably won't be reaching out on the Known Distance range tomorrow. But there's plenty to keep me busy, and I may switch to my scoped Marlin just for grins. If there's time and I do switch to the Model 60, I may let her stretch her legs a bit.

Clean it tonight, and lube it with very light oil, or even a dry graphite lube or something like that.
Ibuprofen tonight and in the AM may be wise as well.
Tomorrow will be when you really start to refine and lock in the new skills. Don't relax and get sloppy.
Make every shot count, either a hit, or a miss that you called and hopefully know why.
