The Ranger that runs the Flintlock Shooting Range lives in a shack across the road from my neighbor's tree farm in Montgomery Co. Today, my neighbor reported that the Ranger, whose name might be Rick, died in his bed last week, apparently from heart problems.

    I hated reading this.:(

Rick was a good dude and was usually the RO on duty every time I went to Uwharrie.

    RIP, man.

Shame, to die alone and not be found for days.
Sad. Thoughts go out to his family and friends for their loss.

That's unfortunate to not be found for days. IMO, it's fortunate to pass away in your own bed. May he rest in peace.

Damn that’s so sad to hear, Rick was a great guy and always took the time to come out and say hello and shoot the shit when I went there to shoot.

Oh crap. Rick was definitely a good dude. Always had a story, always laid back. I probably spent as much time as talking to him as I did shooting most days I went to Uwharrie.

People would have noticed him not showing up if the range had been open, but it's still closed due to 'Rona.

Rick passed in his sleep early Saturday, 5/30. His girlfriend was there and tried to revive him.

A new RSO has been hired. I have heard he is a nice guy.

Thanks you for that info. Nice to know he wasn't alone.

To the rest of you. See what happens when you assume.

It wasn't an assumption... I was told that the neighbor across the road asked the sheriff to do a wellness check, and helped them get into the cabin, where they found him deceased. That story doesn't correspond at all to what Miss Lily posted.

I have met Rick and know both of his neighbors. Miss Lily, please tell me that my story is hogwash! Do you know Rick's girlfriend?

I beg to differ with you good sir. Your OP said he died in his bed last week from apparent heart problems and nothing about being alone or the wellness check part of the story so there was some assuming going on somewhere. Or else others heard the same thing you did. At any rate we have two different versions of the same story here. ;)

That is the info relayed to me by our boss. I know he worked Friday at the range doing some cleanup to prepare for re-opening (whenever that may be, we still don't know for sure.) and that it was his girlfriend or maybe his sister that called to inform the wildlife commission first thing Saturday morning. He may have been alone, but not for very long.

Okay, so either our boss got the story wrong or he shielded me from the truth because he knows I like Rick. Either way, we have now seen how second then third hand, stories can be altered.

I apologize for relaying third hand information.

This saddens me....I have so many good and memorable stories in the short two years I knew him while at that range. Sometimes I'd get there during a week day, first thing in the morning, and be the only person there for a couple hours. Like others have said, I too probably spent just as much time talking to him as shooting. I took two friends there one cold March day, both are twins and up and coming film makers. They were so inspired by his personality and stories that a short film was planned revolving around Ricks stories. Rest in Peace RICK, I was looking forward to hanging out when the range re-opened. I have only been to that range a few times. Looking forward to going back when it re opens.

Rick was super cool the few times I went. His attitude made the range very enjoyable.

Any man would feel lucky to have this many good people with nothing but good comments about him. He must have been a fine fella...He is now resting in the shade on the other side of the river...Stonewall Jackson...

Met the new guy today. He's still in training- had two other fellers from Raleigh kind of helping out.
Seems safety minded, which is good.

Warned him to watch out for the brass goblin who will walk out in front of the firing line when it's hot for a single 22-250 case. :D
Rick kicked that dude out at least twice.

It was a lot busier today than a normal Wednesday pre-'Rona. Oh, and now they have plastic on all the benches.

Right on, thanks for sharing. I'd always go out on a Tuesday or Wednesday first thing, as there would only be a few people max. It's a 2.5 hour drive, but make a day out of it hiking, etc. I prefer to be there when it's less people....
