I got a M&P 15-22 and want to put a red dot on it and am looking at the Holosun 403r. holosun Micro HS503R and the Sig romeo5 . Is one better than the other. $200 is most i want to pay as it’s just a range plinker for me and my son.
Thanks

I’ve run a SPARC on one for years. You can get a newer on for $99 right now:

I’d also look at the Spitfire prism at that link. $139, and you get an etched reticle that will light up red if you prefer.

People say the Romeo 5 isn’t as durable and reliable as some of the more expensive alternatives. For my 15-22 pistol, the Sig has been excellent. Hard to beat for $100ish.

I run these on a lot of my fun guns. They hold up to range work. For serious business guns it is hard to beat Aimpoint T2s.

In my budget-centric lineup I run either the Primary Arms SLx MD-20 or a Holosun 403B; both get mounted on either an ADM or Midwest Industries QD mount, lower 1/3 height.

Below that price point I think you're missing a lot of value in reliability. I would put the PA at the top just because they have such solid CS. Not that I've experienced HS being bad, but I really like PA as a company and I get good deals through them.

If you order through PA, they run 12% off sales all the time and free shipping on their branded optics.

I have multiple ~$130 aimpoint micro clones and they’ve all served me just fine over the past decade. PA micro (mult versions), Vortex crossfire, Vortex Spar AR, Sig Romeo 5, holosun 403, Vortex Spar Solar (a little more $). I like the smaller adjustment caps on the Sig than the PA, but they’re all good. Grab whichever has the better deal or you think looks better.

The adjustment caps on the MD-20 are small; the older Gen 1 Advanced Dot had the larger caps. IDK specifically which one you're referencing, but the rotary dial they currently sell has the larger caps. Another option is the MD-25 which comes with a decent mount and spacers.

At the end of the day, it's a budget dot. Go with price and features for the $. At $200 you should be able to get a dot and a quality mount.

Good point. They have many different versions now. I don’t have any of the newer SLX but looking at their pics online it looks like the ones still labeled as “MD” have the older large caps. The SLX models, both 20 & 25 have much smaller caps but only the SLX advance is as small as the Sig Romeo5.

The size of the caps and adjustment knob is a minor critique, but something worth mentioning IMO. Like you said, we’re talking about budget optics that all work very well.

Thanks for all the responses.
I am leaning towards a 403 or a 503 Holosun the most right now. Vortex crossfire is a consideration as it is $50 or so cheaper.

Ok i ordered a Riton X1 tactix red dot today as i wanted to try one out and they seem to get good reviews and have a great warrenty so hopefully i will like it. Thanks for all the reply's

A much as I love my Aimpoints and EoTech's and hate supporting China I have to admit that the couple of holosun's I have have been rock solid

Those are all great options that will suit your end goal absolutely fine. I really like my Sig Romeo 5 sights. I'm sure I'd be delighted with a Holosun as well.

I've been running Romeo5 and they work great. So many great choices these days and I'm sure most would serve your needs.

If you want to save your self some money, check amazon for a UTG red/green sight. They only cost $30, have a big sight window stay zeroed. There are different manufactures of the same sight, they are all the same. Ive a number of them they have worked for years. make sure you get one with the green dot feature on these because its a lot brighter then the red in bright sun light. Is the dot crisp on these cheap things ? Nope, but if you dial the brightness down its useable. I like the fact that I'm not looking thru a tube and it shoot with both eyes open and you dont even see the sight, just a dot in front of you .
