OK not zero questions, but one question.... about zero...

This may be "how many angels on the head of a pin" sort of philosophical... in that it may not really matter and there may be 100 opinions on it.

What distance do you prefer as a zero for a 45 degree mounted reflex style optic in the role as backup to a LPVO?

I recently put a vortex reflex on one rifle with a Strike Eagle 1-8 as a primary. I've had a Trijicon RMR as a backup to a Leupold 1-4 for awhile. It has been zero'd at 25, but I'm thinking of rezeroing it at 50 and doing the same for the Vortex.

Thoughts?

Purposes include:
General range fun
Occasional competition when I find that majic elixir known as time
Occasional hunting
SHTF

A couple serious comp shooters that I know run 100yd zeros on the RMR backup.

The idea was that all adjustments are a hold over at that zero whereas a shorter zero you have to hold 'under' for certain distances. I could be wrong though.

Keep in mind the arc of a trajectory is based on the intercept point.

If one intercepts short, the bullet path travels too, above, too, then below the point of aim.

If one picks to intercept the summit of the arc, then all bullet paths come too or away from the point of aim.

Of the near zero's:
10/400 = 0, as high as 36" over POA at summit
25/300 = 0, as high as 20" over POA at summit
50/200 = 0, as high as 10" over POA at summit
100 = 0, worst case 2.5" low to summit and drop like a rock afterward

Don't run a Red Dot / Reflex but have offset irons zero'd at 100. No other reason than it was easy.

I was considering doing this with my RMR at 45 degrees zeroed at 15 yards. The reason for this was the competition I do the targets are either that distance or 100+. I had my iron sights set up that way, but close target acquisition was too slow with them.

I ended up just getting a 1-8x which I run now.
