I love REI. I am a member and spend far too much money there. I got a $75 gift card as a graduation gift so I was perusing their website. I had never noticed their used gear section. Some prices are 'meh' but if you are willing roll the dice you can get some steals.

Wait for a garage sale to hit. My buddy who moved to Portland said the garage sales out there are huge and no one uses their stuff before they return it.

I go to the one in the fall. They have a spring one, too, it was about 3 or 4 weeks ago. You definitely get some steals, especially if you go early. Definitely the place to get boots: usually people will wear them once or twice and they "don't fit right." Practically brand new. I scored Oboz Bridger boots for $25 this way.

Some of the stuff is really used, and abused.

I wear size 15 so boots have to be ordered. But I’ve caught some good deals on camping supplies. I bought a few Klean Kanteens for $8 a piece. And it’s great for kids sleeping bags. People take kids out once, they hate it so everything gets returned.

The garage sales are meh. I went to one here in Charlotte. Sat in line form about 6am til they opened around 9 or so. I was probably 50 people back from the front. All I got was a sorta nice camping chair. People run through the damn thing like it's a game show and you get 30 seconds to grab as much stuff as you can. People were literally hoarding in secluded corners of the store, sorting through all the sh!t they grabbed without thinking. If you came near them you'd get a rabid animal "WTF" stare from them and maybe even a vampire-like hiss.

Then there was a shoe section of the garage sale...
Sorry, but i have no need to buy used hiking boots...especially ones with trail mud still on them.

I like their store, and yes, most prices are exorbitant. But I have given up on the garage sales.
