Reliability of newer GM trucks

Friend just scrapped an 05 Frontier because it needed a new engine. Less than 200k miles and he bought it new. Had a warranty engine installed around 50k and he had to replace the transmission at 125k. He was done with it and got $300 from the scrap yard to come pick it up at the mechanic. Maybe he got a lemon but I know several people that have had issues with the Frontiers. I mentioned already my good luck with Toyota's but know they have problems occasionally also.

Did he have the v6 or the 4cyl
