Does anyone know the length of a new spring. I'm sure they compress depending on how much they are used. I think I have some spring stock that will work; just need to know how long to cut it. Seeing how weak these are a couple inches either way would probably work.

Hank,
When I get home Friday I'll check my box of parts, I think I have one and other parts for a 552.

That would be great. Thank you.

I bought a 552 at a local pawn shop that was marked "For Parts Only- As Is". I couldn't pass up the chance to learn something about these rifles. It was missing the sights, magazine spring, and deflector but every thing else was there I think. Stock finish what was left was rough but not too many chips and gouges. Several dime size rust spots on the barrel and general freckling on most of it. No serial number on the receiver but the barrel is marked "AZ" which would be March of 1975 so they are not original go each other. Looked like March of '75 was the last time it was cleaned also. It's coming along slowly and yesterday I took it to the range and single loaded it. Fired 5 rounds with no issues so there is hope. I don't have the skill or equipment to make it like new, but it would be nice to have a decent shooter.

Those are fine rifles . My Dad bought me a BDL version on my 12th birthday in 1976 and I still have it.

I'll share my experiences with that rifle...
- As you requested, I measured my original mag tube spring... 26-1/2" free length.
- After tens of thousands of rounds, mine started misfeeding so often that it just wasn't fun to shoot anymore. I fiddled with it a few times over the years trying to fix it. I cleaned and cleaned again. I replaced the magazine tube assembly. I replaced the extractor. Nothing seemed to help and I was about to give up when I noticed that the bottom of the bolt, where it rides across the hammer, had noticeable wear on it. I think it had raised a burr/step that was slowing the bolt down. I smoothed that out and it ran like a champ again.
- A couple years later, it started misfeeding again, but this time it was only with high velocity ammo. Standard velocity ammo worked fine. I pondered that for a while and thought perhaps the bolt might be bouncing back too hard. I replaced the recoil spring and the buffer and that seems to have fixed it. My guess is that the spring had gotten weak and/or the rubber buffer had hardened with age.
These days, it's still running great and dotting i's as usual.

Hope some of this helps. Good luck on your project.

I am grateful for all of that information. It does help me. I won't know whether it will feed reliably or not until I get the magazine spring installed but it is clean inside the action and all of the moving parts are free and very lightly lubed. I don't use much lube inside a semi-auto action, but I want to give this one every chance. The buffer pad has some spring left to it but if all goes well, it will be replaced before I shoot it much. Probably be next week before I get back to the range to try it and I'll post the results then.

Thanks again.

Got all the missing parts in and put the rifle together. Found that someone had ground the opening in the bottom of the barrel for some reason and now the magazine follower pops up through it and stops the bolt from going forward.

Only cure I can see is to buy another barrel. But, I've reached my spending limit on this one so I'm putting it aside. If I can find a used barrel for cheap, I might try again to get it going. If not, I'll eventually part it out on Ebay. I hate to do that but a used one that works can be had for around $250 so no point in putting more than that in this one.

I appreciate the input I received from you nice folks. Maybe better luck with my next project.
