I have a Remington 700 ADL in .30-06. I've been thinking of building it into a hunting / range gun for out to 500+ yds.

The Remington will be expensive to build due to requiring a gunsmith to do some of the work.

On the other hand, I could sell the Remington to buy a Savage Tactical in .308. That would be about how if want the rifle in the end and has a good trigger to start with. Much less expensive...

I'd the Remington worth building? Or do I cut bait and jump to the Savage?

Thoughts???

Cabelas is running there Savage 12fv models for $369 with a $100 rebate. Excellent deal for $269+tax.

What's expensive about getting a rem700 to 500 yards ?

There are tons of parts for a 700 but IMHO, the Savage is better out of the box. Ford or Chevy

I have a factory original Remington 700 BDL in .30-06 that will hold <4" at 500 yards with my handloads. I didn't test multiple powders or primers, I just picked a powder and primer the LGS had on the shelf and did optimal charge weight and seating depth testing. I did select Nosler Ballistic Tips in 180gr. Even so, it equals but is just barely better than the group size of the best factory hunting load also on the shelf, Federal Premium 180gr. BTSP. Out to 500 yards, point of impact and trajectory are almost identical.

I'm not sure why you think you need to spend big bucks unless you really want a sub .5 MOA.

If that is the case, whatever your budget is, it will only get you halfway there. The rabbit hole is deep and there is no way out. Have fun! The journey is a blast but the destination is always just out of sight around the next bend in the road.

Thanks guys... Debating. I said 500, but my longer term goal is 1000.

I'm trying to find the perfect precision gun to also use for hunting. It doesn't exist best I can tell.

If your long term goal is 1k yds, forget 308. It's starting to run out of steam at 1k and to keep it supersonic all the way, you're really driving it hard. You should consider another caliber with a much better sectional density and ballistic cooefficient, like for example a 6.5XXXX or something in 7mm.

If you are wanting double duty definitely stick with 6.5 or 7mm. The 6mm's are making a spot for themselves in competition, however I wouldn't hunt anything much larger than whitetails.

I decided if I get another hunting rifle it would be a Ruger american predator in 6.5 C. Nice light and great accuracy out of the box. They just released a few models that use AICS bottom metal that are really appealing.

You don't moonlight as a Youtuber named TiberasaurusRex do you? :p

Nope, I knew this stuff before Matty was learning long range shooting with a Daisy Red Ryder :D

I say the real reason that anything 30cal is used as extensively as it is by the US is due to use by the US military, starting with the 30/40Krag. It was arguably the first "small" bore cart adopted to take advantage of the properties of the new smokeless powder. Note that now part of the service rifle competition is an AR event. Guess who uses 556? Look at what is ruling the long range precision game and you'll very very rarely see anything in 30cal.

Good suggestions... I am weighing my options.

Thanks to all!

Sell the 700 and buy a Tikka or Bergara in 6.5CM. This is coming from someone who owns a 700.

Both are guaranteed MOA at 100 out of the box.
You beat me to the punch. I have a B14 Hunter in 308 that is a wonderful hunting rifle. A 308 HMR was going to be my next purchase but since the HMR Pro/Ridge/300 were introduced the choice got harder.

Savages *newer* are just as good as the rest. I've had quite a few that shot sub moa out of the box. Few years ago i got into prs shooting and tore apart my savage 10 fsr in 308 that shot under an inch all day to make my competition rig. They are easy to change out so i slapped a 260 barrel on there from criterion, a mcree chassis and a razor gen II scope on top. Gun has never malfunctioned once in its life and with the criterion barrel it shot .36 inch 5 shot groups all day and that savage has been through hell and back. Don't count out the savage.

Also i have 2 buddies that bought the Bergara hmr in 6.5. Both guns shot over an 1 1/2 inches after break in and 3 different types of ammo. That showed me enough not to buy one.

Jeffncs,
What is wrong with your 700 right now?
The .30-06 and .308 are fully capable at 1000yds. Bought my youngest son a Rem 700 ADL also in .30-06. I used to shoot in the All Army Matches at 600, 800 and 1000yds with a iron sighted National Match M14. Same M14 I took to Africa and Iraq, know your gun and find a good load. I used Federal Gold Medal 168gr BTHP out to 600yds then switched to 173gr M118LR for 800 and 1000yds. Knowing bullet drop is easy, calling winds is the hardest and tricky part.
While the US Army adopted the .30 US Army (30-40) in 1894 in the Krag rifle, the US Navy started n 1894 testing and adopted a year later in 1895 the 6mm Lee Navy in a Winchester straight pull rifle. The 6mm Lee Navy was used from 1895-1899 before getting replace by the Army's .30-40 Krag. Those were replaced by the M1903 rifle first firing the .30 US Govt cartridge Model 1903 then the .30 US Govt cartridge Model of 1906 (30-06 Springfield)

"Q: Does my Bergara B-14 have accuracy guarantee?
A: B-14 rifles are guaranteed to produce 100 yard groups of 1.0 MOA or better with quality factory match grade ammunition."

Then by Bergaras standard the gun is defective and they should be sending it back to get worked on.

The M1895 Lee Navy is one of those grail rifles that I will always want but will probably never have the opportunity to buy or even shoot.
