Looking at the 783 from Remington and the Ruger American Ranch, both with the 16" threaded barrel, which I want to put my suppressor on, chambered in 223

Any reason one is 'better' than the other?
What would you choose?

And? I dont understand what youre referring to exactly

Just target practice. Shooting paper and cardboard

I’d personally go with the Ruger. I don’t think you’d be disappointed with it, but the potential for dissatisfaction with the 783 is quite high. Everything from the fit and finish to the trigger issues they have had the past few years keep me away from the green weenie.

I'll look into them, as well as Mossberg, but I want a bolt action with a shorter barrel that's threaded from factory

The Remington bolt rifles (other than the 700) have generally been a flop. The Ruger is a decent rifle......except for the floppy stock.....and there is some aftermarket support for them.

I do not have a Savage, but I can tell you from experience they appear to have more aftermarket support than Ruger does. As far as production rifles go we all know the R700 has the most by far.

I’d venture to say though that if aftermarket support is something of importance an offering from Savage or getting into a R700 would be ideal.

FYI, the Ruger American Ranch models 26965 (5.56) and 26968 (300blk) accept AR-pattern magazines.

Excellent point, as does the Mossberg MVP. I don’t have much knowledge of the accuracy or dependability of Mossbergs rifles, but they do make excellent shotguns for the price point.

I did a lot of research on the MVP Patrol a while back, and handled a few of them. The bolt had a lot of play at full retraction, enough to make it bind a little at times, but locked up tight when closed. The magazine fit was sloppy. Owners report some issues, mostly with the .223's, but seem to love them enough to deal with it. They are certainly nicely balanced, slick-handling little rifles that make a Ruger Gunsite Scout feel cumbersome. Accuracy is reported to be good.

I haven't put my hands on the Ruger American Ranch yet, but I am looking at them.

Literally the best factory trigger I have ever had the pleasure to squeeze.

thats over 700 bucks! A bit too rich for my blood

I have the Ruger American Ranch in 5.56 (Ruger 26965).

Mounted the YHM Turbo QD mount, Nikon P-Tactical .223. I removed the stock picatinny rail and direct mounted a DNZ 1-pc mount.
Waiting on the tide to go back out before you shoot it?

Well Ive already got a 556 can, and a Vortex scope to go on whatever I get

For hunting and basic plinking, the RAR is a great option. It suppresses well, shoots a good range of bullet weights/lengths, and is very handy if you hunt in the woods where OAL could be a concern. I had one and sold it, and really regret that I did.

I have a ruger American predator in 6.5 creedmoor and a Remington 783 in 6.5 creedmoor. The Remington has a heavy 16.5 inch barrel and shoots 3/4 inch groups at 100yds with factory ammo. The ruger also shoots 3/4 inch groups with factory ammo. Both factory stocks suck, both factory triggers can be tuned easy at home. The Remington is my hunting rifle and the ruger is for long range ( sits in a magpul stock, and has a argos 6x24x50 scope).

For just punching paper and dont wont to mod the rifle get the cheaper Remington. If you want to change stuff out get the ruger. IMO both rifles do well.

Also I have a savage axis in 223 that shoots 1/2 groups at 100yds. I did change out the trigger tho. Also a good budget rifle .

Been a couple of months, wonder what @HMP decided on. Remington came out with the 783 when they acquired Marlin and discontinued the Marlin XS7/XL7 series, which was an excellent and accurate rifle. Both of those rifles are based off the Savage 110 barrel nut system. You could have used a Savage barrel on the Marlin action. Not sure about the 783 using Savage barrels for a caliber change.

My setup is strikingly similar:

Don’t be an idiot like I was and sell it.

I just recently kinda sorta replaced it after selling it a few years back. Got a Tikka T3 with the heavy threaded 20” barrel. Though I do love the Tikka, it’s certainly not as light and handy as the RAR was.

Barrel nut and threading did not change. Just basically a name change from Marlin to Remington, so you can still swap barrels and headspace the 783

Now own a Ruger American Predator 5.56, olive drab furniture on it.
Probably today put the muzzle break and adapter from AAC on the end so I can put on the suppressor.
