As the title pretty much states, and I feel like I already know the answer, but figured I'd get the opinions of you fine people; which would you prefer? A newer Marlin in 45-70, or a Henry 45-70?

Side loading gate doesn't matter to me, I like the comical appeal of that gigantic tube the Henry has.

From a handloading standpoint, can the Henry handle the same beating a Marlin could?

None of the above, older Marlin.

I’m a huge fan of the loading gate, but the Henry looks good and runs well by all accounts.

Henry would be a hands-down upgrade from any 2012-up Remlin lever gun. Marlin centerfire quality died in Connecticut. That's when they moved to Ilion but they didn't take 90% of the Marlin workforce. Basically, If it's made in Ilion it's a POS.

Henry came out with a plain blued and walnut model that is more in line with the Remlin pricing. The action will be a hundred times smoother right out of the box, and the finish will be durable not that black oxide 'parkerization' that Remlin puts on the newer 336s.

The new x series Henry has the side loading gate. But I'm with the above poster find a older jm stamped marlin

That'd be ideal, but those aren't cheap
Neither are the new Henry's or Marlin's in that caliber,
If you're patient you can get a decent deal on an older Marlin.
Recently picked up a 44mag jm stamped marlin for 450.00 .
I've saw the used Marlin's in 45/70 in the 600.00 to 650.00 Dollar range at local pawn shops I already have 3 or I'd have bought them. I know some are asking exorbitant prices for the JM's but their are deals out there.

The Henries are great guns. Love my .41Mag carbine & shot my Bud's .45-70 side by side with my JM Guide Gun- I wouldn't feel like I was missing out if I had the Henry instead of the Marlin.
