I was traveling on outside Lenoir towards Wilson Creek area on Tuesday when we came upon a fire on a hill adjacent to the road. It was about the size of a home and the leaves were burning under trees. The fire was next to 2 buildings beside the house. We turned around and sat across the road to see if any people were doing a burn off but nobody was visable. I called 911 and they sent an initial responder and we drove off hearing sirens in the background. This was on Abbington Road. This could have been a major wildfire. I would be interested to know if someone was purposely burning it off and forgot it or someone flipped a cigarette out the window. Anyone here live up around Abbington Road outside Lenoir?

I have a couple employees who live on Abington road. I'll check with them in a bit.

Good on ya. Lots of stuff to burn up that way.

We have stopped on the highway a couple times for grassfires from cigarette butts. Two times, the fires had gotten huge, but hadn’t spread to adjoining woods, yet. The boys and I stomped and beat both of those out, finishing up right as fire trucks arrived. The firefighters seemed pretty amused when they saw us in our sooty, sweaty glory. Lol

Very little information from my employee. She lives very near the fire. Appeared to be a small bushfire near an old house. No info on how it started. Responders were onsight when she arrived home and a lot of water in the road. All good from what she told me. Thank you for calling it in with all the drought conditions we are going through.

I was curious. Thanks for checking. I’m working in an upscale development called The Coves off Abington Road on a mountain. So upscale they don’t allow contractors thru the residents gate and have their own contractors access gate. The houses all have spectacular views of the state forest areas. After seeing pictures of Pilot Mountains 1000 acre fire I would not want to see another. Only two ways into the area from Lenoir and Burke County. The local fire department arrived fast.

I smoke and have never threw a cigarette out a window. Drives nuts to see a cigarette flying out out a car window. Idiots are among us.

I had a brush fire break out behind the business I worked at once some years ago. We all piled on it with extinguishers and shovels and pretty much got it put out before the FD showed up. They were actually quite annoyed with us for our actions. They wanted it to keep burning and burn off the brush in the area. They weren't allowed to set a burn to get rid of it but because the wind was still they were ok with letting it go and get rid of the brush. We were like 'well excuse us!"
