Retro AR Build #2

I read somewhere that the MACV-SOG and LRRP guys used to put E1 or A1 uppers on XM-177 lowers to get the most out of the collapsible lower mated to a full length rifle upper.
So I decided to piece together a facsimile of one, but with a 1-7 barrel instead of the original 1-12.
Using an Aero stripped lower, Fulton Armory Colt style CAR stock with an old style jam nut (first models weren't what you'd call a castle nut), Colt A1 upper, and the yet to be purchased A1 style pencil barrel, triangle handguards, and a few other little parts, I'll hopefully have it together by the beginning of July.
Anyway, here's the beginning.....

Never heard of, or seen a 20" upper on a XM-177 lower, its interesting, but that news to me.

As I understand it, the whole value of the XM-177 / CAR-15's system was the upper and lower.

There were cycling issues with the short barrel in the beginning, so the easiest fix was a rifle upper.
The original short barrel carbine didn't have the later, long moderator that is today classified as a class III muzzle device.
And the XM-177E2 later morphed into the M-4.

Im looking at the Brownells barrel, it comes nearly complete.

I think I read some time ago that they used 11.5" barrels and a moderator.
Brownells has a "moderator" in their catalog.

They do, but I'm the oddball that shows up to matches with stuff no one thought to use or tried to shoot a match with lol

Just like the "retro look"....Both on Old Sendra lowers either XM15 or M15, top one is Colt Upper,
BCG, Colt Gutz 1/12 twist.
Bottom one, Colt Upper, Colt Chrome BCG, Colt Gutz 1/12 twist 24" Heavy barrel, picked up lowers
when Colt sued Rock Island Armory decades ago (were cheap in bulk )
prefer the retro look over all the crap hanging here and there..Just my .50 worth
of course the center is a HK91A1 one of a few...posted them a while ago..

1-7 A1 pencil barrel and gas tube arrived today. A1 handguards and pistol grip arrive tomorrow. I hope to get the barrel installed on the upper this weekend.
