So what are you returning next week?? The generator, the chainsaw, the room air conditioner you hoped the generator would have enough wattage to run, the 6 cases of bottled water?? What???

Bear in mind that there are more where Florence came from...... AND.... we still have the off the wall ice storm that may or may not make an appearance this winter.. So whatcha taking back??

I didn't buy anything in preparation for this hurricane. We try to stay prepared. But, it has got me thinking about getting a generator. There should be some good deals on gently used ones in a few weeks or months.

Nothing, barely had the money to stock up on canned goods and water lol

I think a lot of retailers may be putting a stop to this. I was in Rural King yesterday - they had a bunch of 8,000 Watt generators up front. Each one had a sign taped to it that said:

1) you couldn't return it if the box had been opened.

2) any warranty returns would have to go through the manufacturer, and that they would not accept any for warranty reasons whatsoever.

No need to return anything. We did not buy anything just for this storm. We always stay prepared for storms and power outages. Batteries get changed in our emergency lights Sept. 1 each year. The generator gets run every two months. One thing we do when we know a storm is coming is to double check that all gas cans are full and that's about it.

Unless you make enough of a fuss. Retailers in the US show their belly like curs when faced with a mildly annoyed customer.

Agreed. I'm guessing the signs were more of an attempt at deterring people from buying them with the intention of returning them afterwards.

Nothing. I didn't buy anything extra for the storm. Filled the tub for extra water for the toilets, not quite sure why since there is enough falling out of the sky. We put some extra ice in the refrigerator, and brought in some bottled water from the garage and put it in the refrigerator. We never lost power, as of yet, so I'm feeling pretty lucky compared to others. This storm has made me think about getting a generator for future storms though.

I think you are right. It seems people always put them up for sale a few weeks after a storm and take a loss on them. Instead of just hanging on to them for the next time.

nothing. But I am using this coupon in the next 2 weeks

Nothing since we didn’t really buy anything (besides some snacks and a couple extra tins of Cope). I will be perusing Craigslist for a, hopefully, cheap NIB generator in the coming weeks, though

I'll be in the market for a chainsaw and possibly an inverter style generator.

No returns here. Didn’t buy anything extra.

I have been thinking really hard about having a whole house propane generator installed though.
Haven’t priced those in a long time. But i read somewhere they’re giving tax breaks on solar systems. Propane will eventually run out

There’s a guy here that sells used saws that run great. I’ve got 2 that he fixed up and one of mine that he fixed up

Only thing we bought extra was gas for the generator, though I dont know why. Ive lived in concord 44 years. I would guess that if I added all the power out time it would total less than 2 hrs. Even during Hugo my power was only out 30 min.

I’ll only be interested in that when the cost of the Tesla batteries comes down.

I'm happily returning my 7 year old back to school on Monday after 6 straight days off!

And I'm joking of course...I love having him home. The love of my life, we had an awesome time, and it was a great opportunity to teach him about prepping and being prepared.

I seen a 6500 predator for 200 dollars on Facebook this morning, must have sold fast, ad is gone now.

I bought gas for the generator and extra canned food. Stuff I’ll use or keep anyway. Haven’t even been eating the canned food the last 3 days, been cooking.

I went to Loris to get gas, set in line a while, filled a few gas jugs with 40 dollars worth and when I got back the power company is working on my road. Hoping to have power tonight or in the morning. Last time during Mathew when I went out for Generator gas, the power was on when I got back. It was about 5 days without power, hoping this time is just 3 days!

I’m about to go see if I can give those boys working down the road some packs of water bread and canned meat.

We were without power only for a few hours this morning. I went outside and could hear a generator running in the distance. It must be a serious rig 'cause nobody's close enough for me to hear a portable. Wish I'd had the foresight and money when we built the house.

Talking to a manager at the local chain hardware store, they expect 50% of generators to be returned.

I can't understand this mindset.

You didn't have a generator, you bought one and now you wanna return it because the storm is over...why? Why put yourself behind the 8-ball for the next disaster? Like dealing with crowds; panicked crowds? Like burning your gas to get something you already had?

Water. You can get a 40-pack of 17oz bottles of H2O at WM for just shy of 4 bucks. That's about 5 1/4 gallons. Keep it in a cool, dark spot outta the sunlight and it ain't going "bad".

"I NEED TO GO GET SOME WATER!!!!" No, what you need to do is plan ahead, so you do not get caught with your pants down when the next storm hits.

I bought more of the items I was buying already, but nothing I could or would return.

The only extra item purchased was an inflatable twin sized mattress. My wife planned to use it when she thought she was going to be locked in at the hospital for 72hrs. She wasn't. The reason I would return it was because I was shopping for the $8 version, but all they had was the $25 one.

I ain't made of money.

Last week, while talking to him, an Assistant Manager at Lowes in Tarboro stated "I bet we sold over 500 generators" in anticipation of the hurricane. Lowes associates told everyone buying generators that, unless it was unopened, absolutely no returns. Now this is just Tarboro. I can imagine bigger cities sold more. Like you said, people always put them up for sale a few weeks after a storm." May be a lot coming up for sale in the coming weeks.

Didn't buy anything extra, so no returns for me.
