I mentioned last week that something interesting was on the way. It arrived on Wednesday but we've been away. Here it is...a Smith & Wesson 642 (no dash) with the box, docs, and tools. Honestly, can't say for sure whether it shipped with the UM Combat Grips. They may be original.

What's so special about a 642 you ask? Well, this is the first production run 1990-1992. This one is likely 1991. It has forged internals, as opposed to MIM. It is clear anodized and not coated aluminum frame. Looks really sharp. Also, it is built on the smaller J Frame, not the J Magnum like modern production 642/442. It is a nice looking gun. Hard to find.

The gun also rounds out this set. 638, 637, and 642 all "no dash" and clear anodized. The 637 and 638 (no dash) are limited production runs of about 500 from 1989. They are quite rare. By contrast, the 642 (no dash) is only uncommon / somewhat rare.

do not post three paragraphs of awesomeness and not post pics.

WTH is wrong with you? You are smarter than that…you passed the Bar…..

Will drop this here too. Just posted it elsewhere. This is my favorite 3" Model 36. It has a smooth face trigger (my preference), nice trigger pull, and comfortable Hogue grips. It rode IWB from just south of Pittsburgh to Charlotte, NC today.

Beautiful! The holster is artwork as well. Where did you get that holster?

It is a TT Gunleather, the KX Lightweight model. They are fantastic IWB holster. Well made, slim, sit deep for good concealment. I've probably got 10-12 of these. Use them for Smith J-K and Colt D frame revolvers. Had them made in 2" and 3". Also use them for various Glocks.

Here's a Colt D Frame set up...

Wish I could post pics here, but haven't found a good site to put my pics since photobucket decided to start charging a LOT for the ability to post a few pics!

Posted this on another forum a few minutes ago. Thought that it should go here as well. Smith & Wesson Model 60-10 with Uncle Mike's combat grips. Perfect for hikes where 2 legged threats are the the only concern.

Hi, you can select "Upload a File' button and select your photo(s) on your system to upload.

I've posted a lot of shiny blued or nickel older Smiths over the past couple years, but I am also a huge fan of the modern production Smith & Wesson 442. It's a regular in the carry rotation. It's a reliable, durable, light, and easily concealed revolver. Hard to beat.

I installed a titanium cylinder on the one on the right. It's super light. On the left, with the Barami Hip Grip, that one is about 12 years old. It's got a couple thousand rounds down range and been all over the place with me. It's traveled to Reno, sketchy areas of New Orleans, etc. I like it so much that and almost don't want to fly with it anymore because of concern that the knuckleheads at TSA will lose it. These revolvers can go from waistband, to pocket, to ankle holster, briefcase, and allow for carry almost anywhere.

Love those D framed Colts. My first centerfire revolver was a NIB Colt Agent I got at a San Antonio gunshow before I went off to basic. Got a Detective Special later but it went to SIL. Both long gone. Course love the J frames. Have had several M60 with square and round butts 1 7/8" bbls and one 4" 651 .22 WMR kit gun. Had one of the first 442 Centennials (no dash) when they came out in 90'-91' and later and have a 442-1 Pro.

@Prosecutor How does that early 642 compare to today's version in weight, function and shooting experience?

You need a "Bullitt" upside down rig.

I have this one by Rusty Sherrick but loaned it to somebody about 2 years ago. He's still got it. Fine with me. It's a super cool holster but, despite my best efforts, I've not found shoulder carry to work very well (for me). That said, I've used this holster to carry beneath a sweatshirt in "non-permissive" environments. It's deep concealment and a bit more accessible than an ankle holster. In fact, it's almost as quick as drawing from waistband. Nonfiring hand lifts the sweatshirt and the revolver pulls straight down with the other hand.

My .357 S&W Model 60-14

Got it in 2008; was doing flag folding details and having to stop in shady places I couldn’t carry much else. These days I’m wishing I had an airweight though

@Prosecutor ...
Some buddies doing a demo found these grips in an old house, gave them to me.
They appear to be unused.
I put them on my safe queen/mint 10-6. What are they? Are they Cokes?

Those look like really nice "football" (reference to the speedloader cutout) target grips. Good stuff. Not "Cokes" but quite nice. Those should be comfortable at the range.

Yeah they feel great!
That gun doesn't get shot though, it's just too pretty. I do have another 10-6 shooter-grade that plays well.

Have you seen one of these?
Taurus 415T. Titanium ported 41 mag snubbie. No longer available.
Taurus 415T 001 .22.jpg
Everyone thinks it's stainless, and they did make a stainless version.
I canned the ribber grips in favor of the Pach's. Pachmayr doesn't even list them, but it's the same frame as the Judge.
I don't think it's rare, but it appears to be uncommon. I've never seen another one.
ETA; I didn't mean that to appear snobby, I've tried to find others who've had one and get their experience with it. I've never found anyone.

Hey Jeppo. The 642 (no dash) may be just slightly lighter because it is on the original J Frame, as opposed to the more current J Magnum Frame, but the difference is negligible. I cannot feel it. Shooting experience is about the same as modern production in terms of mechanics and feel. However, the appearance is quite a bit better than the current production. I really like these clear anodized frames. Classy little gun.

I have not heard of that one...but not surprising because its a .41 Magnum. That would be an oddball caliber for me. A lot of folks like that round. Looks like a solid snub. I can't tell by eyeballing your photo...is that about the same size as a K Frame Smith?

It's dimensions and appearance are identical to my 2.5" 19-5. Fits the same holsters.
It shoots well. Not real bad unless you put some bear loads in there and then it gets your attention. The porting does help.
The trigger is not a nice as the 19-5, but that's a favorite so maybe I'm biased.

Wish I had that Taurus 415T or a Smith 357NG in .41 Mag. Fellow 41 nut here. Had a gunsmith friend of mine growing up that wanted a fixed sight N frame .44 Mag. His 4" 29 and my spare 58 .41 Mag crossed. He got the frame and and I got a 29 frame with 58 cylinder and barrel. Had to build up the front sight to be higher with the adjustable rear. Still have that first 58 but no longer the hybrid.
