It seems even though I live in farm country in Camden, NC, I’ve managed to find an area of the country completely devoid of rifle ranges. It’s really a head scratcher when you consider the land is all flat, wide open farm country and theres multiple large US Navy and USCG bases in the area.

Academi is nearby, but they aren’t open to the public that I’m aware of. I do plan to enter some competitions there, but I have no place to do load development or practice.

Norfolk County Rifle Range has been closed to new members for several years. I’ve emailed them and asked multiple times, but no dice. Their long range comps are done at Academi anyway, so joining them won’t give me access to a long range where I can practice or work up loads.

The next closest that I’m aware of is Outer Banks Gun Club. I may try to join them, but they are 1 hour -15 min drive from me and it seems they only have 100 yds.

There’s a NC Public Range with max 100 yds that is 1.5 hrs away in Jackson, NC.

Same thing with Frontline Defense. I’m very interested in joining them and entering some comps there, but they are over 2 hrs away. So I’d be driving 4.5 hrs round trip each day to practice or compete. I still may do it, but if anyone knows of any better options, I’m all ears.

I‘m a Navy veteran and Life NRA member looking for anything closer than 1.5 hours away with at least 100 yards, preferably 200-300.

Any possibility of befriending some local farmers and using their land?

This is what I was thinking. There are no "shooting ranges" in Hyde County. But there are a million places to shoot. And you can shoot a looooong way at many of them.

Is Academi the old Blackwater in Moyock?

Any possibility of befriending some local farmers and using their land?
Yes they are Blackwater. They have regular High Power matches and from what I have heard, will let you shoot whatever you have. So when they do 1000 long range matches, I could take a PRS rifle or my AR-15, AR-10, whatever and just shoot - not for official score.

I will definitely keep an eye out for any farmers willing to allow some shooting. These days they have good reason to be careful though.

I’d even be willing to invest in land if I could get some others to form a club with me. Maybe a hunting lease/shooting range. 50-100 members all with $2000-$5000 (the price of a good precision rifle) could probably find enough land to form a club.

There is a lot of public land in the area, and not all game lands prohibit target shooting. Do your due diligence to make sure you're not running afoul of the law, but you may find a place close to your home where you can shoot for free. A power line easement on public land seems like it would be ideal. This advice is worth what you paid for it. I haven't tried it but I would if I needed to, AFTER I crossed all the Ts and dotted all the Is.

I did look into C2 a year ago. They are 50 minutes away, but the issue was cost. I forget the membership rates but it was pretty high and all separate. (Maybe $1000?) So if you joined for outdoor rifle shooting, you got no access to pistol or tactical ranges and vice versa. Want to take your kids? Costs extra. Want to shoot a different type of gun? Costs extra. Certain days the range isn’t available, even to members, because they reserve it for classes. All things considered, I’d rather drive farther to a club that isn’t trying to gouge me.
