Rifles in 25-06 and 7mm weatherby

Love my 25/06 marlin XL7 with 110 gr accubonds. It’s very lethal.

Nothing wrong with those chamberings. Just not my cup of tea but recognize the value of a good gun. I reload and cast so not a disadvantage to me.

I was a 25-06 fan back in my rifle days. I used an early Ruger M77 to hunt groundhogs. On that M77, the hotter the load, the tighter the groups. I ended up shooting the throat out of the barrel, the only gun I've ever damaged by shooting it. I made some impressive long range shots with that rifle.

I have a 25-06 and it’s a fantastic open range rifle for deer. Last weekend I was in deep woods with it since my only other option was one of my ARs (sold my other bolt guns last year and hadn’t found suitable replacements). Had a beautiful, big-bodied 8 pointer (much bigger than The last one I posted in the deer down thread) walk out at 50y and took a shot, but didn’t realize how much brush and limbs were between me and the deer through the scope. He walked off without a scratch, and Sunday I walked off with an 18” Ruger American Predator 308 and 2 boxes of Superformance 165gr (I’ll work up some hand loads after the season). Won’t make that mistake again. That 25 is just too light and fast for the woods, and a 24” barrel has been combersome as hell to drag that deep.

The limbs that deflected that .25-06 bullet will deflect the .308 too. The RAP will definitely be handier in the woods, though. It’s why I’m in the market for something other than my .270 (23.6” barrel) to use as a woods rifle.

That predator in 308 is a nice gun. Mine loves 165 gr accubonds over 4064 powder. I too think the 25 and 308 will deflect off of brush like the poster above. But the shorter barrel will be handy. Check out the magpul American hunter stock. The stock stock is flimsy on the forend and needs to be relived around the barrel so it’s not touching.

Thanks for the heads up on Magpul stock. Didn’t realize they had one out for it.

Yeah, I don’t expect 308 to beat through brush like I what I shot through, but I do think it won’t deflect as critically as the 90gr soft point that I hunt with in the 25.

It was a really bad scenario and I’m lucky and happy that I didn’t wound that buck. He came in on my right, and I had to wait for the right time to stand and turn around in my climber. He went behind some trees and I picked a spot where he would likely walk out and I had a clear shot. He came out further than I thought he would, and I couldn’t see all the crap in the way of my shot through the scope. He’s my target buck for my last tag this year now.

I have one in my cart on Optics Planet right now. $265 plus another 10% off. Can’t decide if I want to pull the trigger.

That’s a good price. I effed up and didn’t pre order one for $199. What’s that 10% code I might order one for that price

GUILTY!!!

So you have a stock on the Ruger platform? How do you like it compared to the original? This short 308 packs a punch in such a light rifle. A little more weight and a more solid platform would make this little Ruger a much better range gun in addition to being a great hunter, me thinks.

No mines still wearing the stock one with a cheek riser and a bigger bolt knob by glade tactical. I’ll be ordering a magpul today though. Really like it
