Thoughts on Romeo 7 as a serious use red dot? Currently have it on a 14.5” HD rifle. Haven’t had any problems with it so far. See a bit of a halo on the dot when on the top 2 brightness settings. Considering returning for replacement, but almost seems like this is an issue on most of them. On the fence about moving to a Aimpoint PRO ($160 - $480). Trying to justify the jump. I get Aimpoint is the gold standard as the tried and true. Anyone had experience running the Romeo 7 for an extended period of time?

Also any red dot recommendations between the two?

I'm sorry I can't offer an opinion on the 7, though my 5 has been fine.

I can offer an opinion on the PRO. I have several and they are fantastic sights, but if I were buying today I'd take a hard look at the Aimpoint RDS. The price jump is not very significant but I've been impressed by what I'm reading about the RDS.

The RDS downside for me compared to the Pro would be buttons instead of a twisty knob and odd mount heights.

The biggest plus would be the size, of course. The PRO is quite large and heavy. Also, the PRO mount is ok, but bulky and too low in my opinion. It can be upgraded at more cost. I've also been reading that the dot may be crisper to some and I would think a magnifier would be easier to get in there if that's your thing.

...but if you can get the PRO for a good price it's great. The price you listed ($480) is too high. These were in the low $300s a couple of years ago.

Here is an RDS for $450 from a fantastic dealer. I'll bet you could find one even cheaper if you look around.

Be sure you understand the mounting heights on the RDS before ordering.

My vote goes to the SIG 4T-Pro over the Aimpoint Duty RDS.

I love my Aimpoint PROs but they ARE quite chunky and take an uncommon battery. Hard to beat their value in the used market but in the 4-500 range I'd go with the 4T-Pro. I know a lot of folks replacing their T2 with them as well. They also have the 4XT-Pro which is the AA bat model.

I would absolutely not recommend a Romeo7 for any serious use. "Cheapest" I'd go is a HS 515.

I’ve seen others say they would not recommend Romeo 7 as well but never any reasoning behind it. What makes you say stay away from it? What makes the HS515 a better choice.

I’ve seen a Romeo 5 take a shotgun blast from 10 yards and still function. I would only assume the 7 to be a bit more durrable.

Romeo7 is 6061 vs 7075 on the 515. - not a deal breaker I guess, but speaks to the robustness. Plus the weight savings are nice.

I'm generally an optic snob, although I've backed away from that somewhat as better budget options exist now.

I guess it really just comes down to the fact that I haven't seen a quality dot from SIG outside of the 4T-Pro. Not that the others like the 5 are "bad", but it's essentially a HS 403 or along the lines of a PA Advanced Micro. Good for $100, but I wouldn't have it on anything other than backup guns.

I've never used the 7, but for an HD carbine I'd want something fast, light and rugged AF. Are budget dots good enough? Almost definitely. I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

All that said and I have a PA GLx 2x Prism on one of my main rifles so maybe I'm talking out my butt. Just haven't found something I liked better for the purpose.

Hard to go wrong with PROs even if they are clunky. You can get them used all day long for $325-350. I've had three, currently two and wished I didn't sell the other.

I own a PRO and a 515T.

I prefer the 515 at a similar price, it may not have quite as proven a track record, but both optics are seeing heavy use in Ukraine. To me the 515's eotech reticle is just 👌. As a fan of super high optic mounts the added benefit of the outer ring is super nice.

I also find the oem PRO mount to be annoyingly bulky, especially if you want to toss it in a bag, so I've swapped it over to a DD mount which is super nice and low profile.

No input on the Romeo 7, but I would assume it's a little more hobby grade than the others, whether that's a fair assumption or not? Idk.
