Foggy mountain gem mine sent me home with a big bag of "salted" dirt.

I plan to "sleuce" it with GF this weekend in the Eno. Basically, a fun date.
There are guaranteed to be gems in the dirt, they saw to that.
If we find a nice Ruby or emerald, what then?
I was thinking toss it in the brass tumbler with some sand and polish it up.
Maybe, on some anniversary or special day it would become a necklace or other piece of Jewelry. Probably needs to be "cut" for that to happen.

I'm dumb. School me please.

Those mines usually offer those services. You could call them and talk to them if you find something worth having cut. When we took the girls we had them make one into a pendant but we used a mine in Spruce Pine.

I got the feeling it was a huge tourist scam, selling dirt, then getting paid to "cut" the shitty stones. Eternal pessimist...

We did this a number of years ago and my wife and mother both got stones cut and mounted. My wife got a 2 carat ruby and mom got a 4 carat sapphire. Cost $15 a carat to cut and $15 to mount. The wife took hers to the local jewelry store to get a chain to put hers on and the jeweler asked to see the stone. He examined it and told her it was an excellent quality stone and that he could not have gotten her one for the price that was that good. ;)

Well that's a decent endorsement!
